That's a real pity. Humdrumming have been producing some quality books lately - Rain Dogs and Beneath the Surface, to name a couple.

Mighn't it just be a revamp of the website...?

But if it's true, that sucks. I've been impressed with every Humdrumming book I've read - and there was one mentioned in one of the story notes in the 2nd HBoHS, a collection of interviews with various horror writers, that I really liked the sound of.

The official word is that there's some internal stuff -- reorganising, etc., -- going on right now. We're told not to panic and that things are being sorted, but for the interim they aren't shipping books.

Who knows what the actual truth is, but any preorders should have been shipped by now, and that includes any dealer orders, so for the interim you'll still be able to buy the Humdrumming books, just not from Humdrumming.

Let's hope it stays good news, otherwise my brand new book will end up a bit stillborn, which would be more than a bit unfortunate.

Well, like I said, the word I was told was the "official" word, but I made no claims to its veracity.

I had hopes things would work out (even though I knew those hopes were unlikely, to say the least) but it sounds like, from that thread, there's no hope left. Ah well.

if anyone wants a copy of my book I can direct you to a local store that currently has copies.

My condolences to Mike Kelly, whose novel never made it to the printer.

It's all hugely depressing. As some of you know I used to be part of the company and there's no doubt I hoped the last twelve months or so - for which I can take no credit - would see it grow bigger and bigger.

Apparently that's not to be.

Yes, very depresssing. I love Humdrumming books, and this current state of affairs is awful.

As far as I know, trading has ceased and the assets are now in the hands of the receivers, but all existing orders are apparently to be shipped.

I won't go into my own personal thoughts on a public forum, but I really think this has been an opportunity missed - it shouldn't have happened.

All the discounts that distrubutors are demanding between 40-57% are crippling the small presses. Amazon (with the kindle market) are reeling producers in with small discounts and then they will hike them up when they have them.

Unless you're very lucky or working at it full-time with a smart business head on you, I think small press publishing is a labour of love.

Ally, distributors like Cold Tonnage etc pay for shipping charges, so 40% is reasonable. I've always made sure that the dealer and myself have made roughly the same profit on a book. That's how I price them, no more, no less. Any direct sales boast my returns.

I'm really sorry to hear this, Simon. But there WILL be other book deals in your future.

As Gary said above, buying directly from the small presses greatly helps us to survive. Not to make a profit, but to survive. Most people, however, continue to buy from dealers. Catch-22, these specialty booksellers make small press publishing viable. Unfortunately, the booksellers are also hurting financially these days. I have a seller who owes me over $800 but is simply in no shape to pay. What do you do? What can you do but wait and hope things improve? In the meantime, common sense tells me not to add to the debt by shipping more books to that seller. So I've lost (for the present, at any rate) perhaps my biggest seller.

Btw, anyone want a copy of a Rhys Hughes novel?

I'm surprised by this, too. I thought Humdrumming, in the grand scheme of things, were probably in a better state than most small presses.
Just shows you it's nothing to do with the quality of work or finished product; given the state of the global economy, I hope this isn't the shape of things to come.

I think Humdrumming got surprised by this, too. There are a myrid of reasons this happened, not all appropriate for publication here (as my good friend Mr McMahon points out).

Karim, I'm in the process of trying to secure the rest of my print run in hopes of distributing them myself to interested parties/dealers. Not the best outcome, but the best of a bad situation. Luckily the book sold so well at Fcon that there aren't many copies left.

I didn't get such mail.

a while ago I asked Humdrumming and then they mailed me that it should ship soon, which surprised me as the book was ready for shipping immediately after you signing it.
So This afternoon I sent a new mail to that person, but sadly no response yet.

This is bad news - for Humdrumming, who I thought were well grounded and destined for greatness; for the great writers involved and poor Mike and Carol (and, obviously, many others) who never quite made it to the market; and for us lot, who enjoyed their output.

It is disheartening to see another publisher close up shop. I can only imagine the frustration of Simon, whose excellent debut collection won't get the initial exposure it deserves, and Michael, whose collaborative novel came extremely close to seeing the light of day before Humdrumming folded.

However, I have every confidence that both BENEATH THE SURFACE and OUROBOROS will emerge (or in Simon's case, re-emerge) in the future.

Have you received a notification of shipment, Huw? Let me know and if not I'll follow up for you.

As for a second printing: I don't have the same faith as you at the moment. Who'd want it after the initial flood of readers have already hit?

Once the remainder of these copies go, I'll try and gauge the interest level from those who missed out and maybe then approach someone about printing some more. And if somehow I get some award recognition, that should help too. It's been a strong year, though, for collections, and I doubt I can compete with Messrs Meloy, Samuels, and McMahon.

Yeah, you didn't think my inscription out at all, did you?

Ally, can you send me the copy of BENEATH THE SURFACE you bought? I'd like to change my inscription to you.

Oh, I know Zed's fiction is trite and not thought out, but at least I'm prepared for it before I read it. Ally's inscription came as a shock!

BTW, I'm just messing with you Ally. No worries about the inscription.

Actually, it's better it doesn't have one as I was so angry it was missing I immediately put the book up on eBay. It's doing quite well! I'm going to use the money to buy more copies of my own book back

Tried to start a Paypal dispute to get my dosh back, but got this:-

Please note that refunds cannot be issued through PayPal's resolution centre.
Humdrumming Ltd. is no longer trading and, by refunding your money, would be seen to be breaking the law by offering a creditor preferential treatment.
Humdrumming's affairs are being handled by David Chappell of GCP, and if you have any questions regarding outstanding invoices or monies owed please contact him via xxxxxxxxxxxxx

...which all seems understandable given the circumstances, so I'm going to wait and see. I'm only owed just over £15 but I'd rather get it back than not, although I'm not holding my breath over it.

It's a shame as my few dealings with Humdrumming in the past have been superb, and they've always been most helpful and friendly, unlike that bastard behind Gray Friar, up in his tower rolling naked in his ill-gotten gains.
Allegedly.

Simon, my copy of Beneath the Surface arrived today. I picked it up on the way to hospital (I was sitting in the waiting room examining it, and got some curious looks from other patients). It's a very attractive book, both in size and design. The inscription is lovely - I'm very, very happy with it. Thanks!

Basically it boils down to showing a work colleague how to post a review on Amazon while I was coincidentally looking at your book.

I should have given it more stars I suppose.

OK, I'll spell it out: potential buyer from the publisher, undecided on whether to buy - decides to take a quick look on Amazon - sees the 'lukewarm' three stars - decides not to bother clicking to unfurl the review - decides not to buy...

Not rocket science, man.

Your welcome for the inscription, Huw. I know how very important it is to let people you like know how you feel about them by writing it in an inscription. Yes, the inscription is a sign that you care for and respect the recipient, and thus very very important to get right.

But, seriously, I'm glad you like the book, and will consider it a personal triumph if I've managed to write something the insides of which you like as well. I'm frankly amazed it's already there!
