Hi

What was the name of that pub with the theatre you were talking about the other night?

The King's Arms- Chapel Street, Salford. The next Embryo Nights are Friday and Saturday this week. There's a piece I've directed on on the Friday night if you're interested...

You two are making me feel very nostalgic. I used to spend hours researching in Salford and Manchester. My ancestors lived in Greengate, on Cobourg street, Regent/Oldfield Road in the 1800's. Isn't Chapel Street close to them?

Ally- yep, Chapel Street is the lower end of the A6- turns into Salford Crescent when it crosses Oldfield Road.

A book I've been reading you might like is 'The Gangs Of Manchester' by Andrew Davies- about the Scuttlers, the street gangs of the 1800s in Manchester and Salford. Who knows, maybe you'll find some familiar names in it! What's really interesting, though, is that you could take any of the stories about youth violence, change a few names, and you'd have any contemporary news story on chavs. So maybe chavs aren't a sign of civilisation being in terminal decline, which is nice to know. People finding Russell Brand and Little Britain funny, on the other hand, takes rather more explaining...

I've been thinking along the same lines about street gangs in each century.

If you see any Shakeshaft/Shakespeares/Leighs/Ashtons/Dawsons - let me know :>)

Simon B - You know, I think I've got a book about the Victorian underworld which references 'The Gangs Of Manchester'. I'm going to hunt it out.
