Avati is mainly a director of nostalgia comedy set in war or after-war times in Italy. He's from the Emilia region, among the Appenines, where the Germans retreating in WWII perpetrated a lot of abominations, mainly in response to being dogged by partisans. It's a country niche for ghostly legends, besides. So Avati gets his inspiration for scary movies which are founded in such memories. "THE HOUSE WITH SMILING WINDOWS" is a story of madness coming from magic voodoo practice. It is powered up by a very particular regional dialect which is completely lost in translation or dubbing. The same with ZEDER (father Costa's corpse opening his eyes and watching into the camera that students of the paranormal have experimentally set inside his coffin is genuinely creepy, especially after they realize he has crawled out of vision, to reappear from under the lab floor.) "L'ARCANO INCANTATORE" is more of a dark fable than a horror movie, I don't know if it was ever distributed abroad. "THE HIDEOUT", in spite of actress Laura Morante who has great fame in Italy, partially fails to deliver because it's set in the States and the regional dialect and ambience are renounced. Certainly that's the same with non-Italian movies to Italian spectators, that is: losing the magic of original language and superstition.

I liked Zeder and The House with Laughing Windows. I haven't seen the others.

Zeder and The House with Laughing Windows are both excellent, IMHO.

She Loves You?

I thought House with the Laughing Windows was a splendid Euro-horror picture, although that opennig credits sequence makes me want to say 'Mi Colore' in a deep voice whenever I'm fingerpainting
