Did anyone see Screen Wipe last night? Mr Brooker covered kids' TV and aside from a nice piece about Oliver Postgate that was about the most respectful thing I think he's ever done there was five minutes on some US kids' Christian show that made me laugh so much the tears were streaming down my face. 'It's the closest thing I've ever seen to a genuine nightmare' was the comment & he wasn't far wrong. Broken, badly put together puppets that look as if they'd been rescued from a skip and then set on fire or had the shit kicked out of them doing Bible readings and waxing philosophical about how 'Crack is bad because my ex-wife, her new man's put her on crack and that really hurts'. Another puppet with a silly hat on keeps going on about how he's 'The Image of the LORD!'. Then a stuffed Panda appears through a window and starts singing an Aria while a bloke in an alien mask strums the guitar. Unbelievable and absolutely unforgettable. Catch the repeat if you can. |

I saw it and agree about the Oliver Postgate piece - very well done and really quite moving. As for the puppets thing, that was truly terrifying but moreso was the thought that whoever had made it had recruited enough people to make the show with. |

I thought that Mark - who were all those people? There were more people on that set than appeared in all of Jess Franco's films put together, and it was more unsettling than any of them |

I assumed that it was some kind of church-youth group, John - most of the people were covering their faces and they certainly weren't puppeteers! And yes, I haven't seen many Franco films, but it was more unsettling than those I have seen. |
