Displaying a chilling sense of timing, my laptop has finally decided to take the huff with me - it doesn't recognise anything in the 4 USB slots, is slower than a working day to boot up and basically isn't working right. So, I'm after a new one. Any recommendations for about £400? I'm thinking a Toshiba, as they're the market leaders, but would appreciate any comments from you folks before I take the plunge... | ||

Just ordered the bugger! I saw a portable USB hard drive advertised on TV for £75 yesterday. I currently use a lowly 1GB USB stick for backing up, but might invest in one of these babies next year. | ||

I love my little Toshiba Tecra (I named her "Thana"). The odd minor glitch here and there, but she's been a good sport about everything and never really been any trouble. | ||

No drives are really 100 percent safe. I've had the most luck with Lacie drives and they have USB, firwire 400 and 800. It must be said that I did loose the data on one drive once- but I was travelling a great deal with it- ie touring for 6 weeks straight...But they are the best IMHO. But of course uploading and printing and backing up everyday is of course a must! They also have a more portable model thats twice as sturdy, half the size but twice as expensive :-( Also it doesn't need its own power supply- which is probably what you are looking for... | ||

Gary, I bought a Toshiba laptop for £400 in the PC World sale last january and it's fantastic - much better than my old Sharp 10" screen one. The Toshiba has been totally reliable so far (touch wood), and the screen is amazing. I don't really use it for music, but the speakers are excellent, too. It's a pleasure to struggle writing on it... | ||

I've been using a Toshiba Satellite Pro for around two years now, and have no complaints whatsoever with it. I believe that they do a spin-off model which would probably fit your price range. And our local School Board, for which I'm a Trustee, also provides me with a laptop for Board business. The one they allocated me is an Acer Aspire 5500Z, and I know that Acer's come highly recommended (especially for cost) by our local supplier (Kamloops Computer Centre). So far, it seems to be performing well, though it doesn't have the hard-drive capacity of the Toshiba. Christopher |
