Jesus. Tossled-haired mumbler. A slab-faced monster. Maybe he'll grow a new head by 2010.

Was appalled at first ('it's Frankenstein!') but then he grew on me while we watched. I think he'll be good.

Seems like the worst possible combination of elements: too young to have gravitas and yet still and eyesore. He's an Easter island statue.

I watched the last few minutes of Dr Who Confidential and he convinced me. We'll see.

Hmm.

I feel me and 'Who may become like a relationship that has gone on too long...I feel Matt Smith will appeal to the young fans.

Perhaps he will wear drainpipe jeans, pointy shoes and a 'just so' arranged hairdo.

Perhaps he won't.

My point is....I expect he will be a fine actor and very popular. Equally, I suspect myself, and maybe a lot of other older guard 'Who fans will smile benignly and accept that the kids own 'Who now and us Dads don't.

Then again...Maybe I'm wrong.

After all, I hated tom Baker when he took over but he ended up my favourite of all Doctors.

Then again...I was so much younger then.

I don't think it's to do with age. I thought Ecclestone was wrong for the role, Tennant was terrific and this new guy looks like a disaster again.

And that woman from the IT crowd sets my teeth on edge. Having a big shouty voice isn't funny.

Richard Ayoade would have been a great Doctor. He could be quiet, introspective, almost shy.

I liked Chris Ecclestone much more than David Tennant.

Did you notice how old Tennant seemed on 'Confidential compared to Matt Smith?

Us oldies are yesterdays news...the Kiddies own 'Who now.

Again, this has nothing to do with age, other than the fact that a very young actor strains credibility when playing a sagacious character. This excuse that it's just for kids was the same one initially used to stifle criticism of the Star Wars prequels.

....I don't really!

I don't agree though Protodroid...I do think 'Who is now in the hands of a younger generation and the casting of Matt Smith now passes the baton to the kids.

But it's ok, its a different show now, us oldies don't need it anymore.

I thought the last series was tired, so i don't have a probelm with major changes.Maybe it's me, but as G.Fry says...Who gives a shit?

And the Star Wars prequels were crap!:-)

I agree, Proto - I said a while back that I thought Ayoade might make a good Doctor. The woman from The IT Crowd, while good for that role (Jen), would have been terrible as the Doctor.

I find that woman very sweet and quirky, and different to a lot of telly women.
Ayoade would have been ace.
But this guy is deeply strange, very 'alien'; the feeling of almost horror I experienced when first seeing him quickly gave way to the realisation that he seemed very intelligent and thoughtful. I say give him a chance - he has yet to cross the floor of the Tardis set. Really; new, unwanted things are good for us.
Btw this pic is better;

Yes, I had that feeling of horror on seeing him, like they introduced him with a flash of lightning and a roll of thunder. Yes, he's exactly what I wouldn't have chosen, so maybe this is the telly equivalent of eating our greens.

Maybe that's how they'll write him -- bloody scary. That could be good. A ride on the TARDIS could be like a ghost train then. You'd want to get off but what's outside the doors would be even worse.

We should trust in Stephen Moffat. He wanted someone in his 40s initially, too, but obviously saw something in this chap. What's everyone complaining about? He's going to be great Doctor! I said so from the start. Could be worse. Could be Andy Peters.

That's the spirit!

Gary; I give a shit! We all must about the things we love! You would give a shit about Ramsey writing a Scary Movie 4 tie-in or summat.
Actually, that would probably be ok...

And GC - you're never too old or young for Who, or indeed anything.

Proto, apparently the plan is that the Doctor won't have any companions- it'll be interesting to see how they handle that narratively, but means we can have a Doctor who's maybe a lot less cuddly than previous versions.

Andy Peters... oh god, that's done it now. Nightmares for a flipping week. Thanks a bunch, mate.

I love the idea of a lone Doctor. But that would make it difficult for him to be brooding and mysterious -- we have to have some way in to empathise with the character and the situation. I really hope they change the TARDIS.

I am sure he will be great!

I just have a feeling that the programme is moving further away from us oldies to the younger generation who consider the first Ecclestone series 'Series 1'.

Tony, you old sweety -you know you will love it, you love everything!

I'm scared. And worried. And nervous.

I do feel that he's too young. But I also agree that Stephen Moffat's got to have a plan here... so... I guess we'll see.

On the plus side, I reckon this will give David more time to make babies with me.

Hey! Don't be like my son's girlfriend and be wanting DT locked in the part forever, or just want a pin-up in the part and refuse to watch more than an episode! That's not what Who is about, a dishy guy! That's MORE scary!

Sorry - my rant is more at others, there. Such an odd opinion - it feels like folks have been more into Tennant than Who...
