MacNeice's 'Bagpipe Music' is a real classic. Auden and MacNeice both rock. Why people neglect stuff like that while getting excited about insipid drivel like Betjeman is hard to explain. |

I quite enjoy Betjeman's poems. |

But that's not enough. Is it? One can quite enjoy a Spice Girls single or a James Herbert novel or a lukewarm doner kebab. That's never enough. |

Specifically 'Who Do You Think You Are', THE RATS or a small doner in naan bread (with chilli sauce) from the Acocks Green village takeaway on the Warwick Road. In case anyone thinks I'm making empty generalisations. |

Yes, I appreciate Macneice and all manner of things like Wagner and Big Brother. catholic and eclectic. I don't think, though, Betjeman is 'insipid drivel'. |

Nor do I on reflection. Weak tea with two sugars might have been a better metaphor. |

Des, did you hear that the lady honoured as 'Miss Joan Hunter-Dunne' died last month, at an advanced age? A one-time crush of Betjeman's, apparently. Bless. |

I've just read a truly terrifying story by Elizabeth Bowen (who was influenced by Katherine Mansfield) recently re-discovered and published, called "Just Imagine". It should be a horror classic. |

Do you like Elisabeth Taylor, Des - the short story writer, I mean? |

It's in the book I describe on the Elizabeth Bowen thread (Unpublished and Uncollected Stories), ie THE BAZAAR & OTHER STORIES (Edinburgh Unversity Press 2008). |

Gary, I've got two collections of stories by Elizabeth Taylor - 'A Dedicated Man and other stories' and 'Hester Lilly and other stories' - but none seems to contain one entitled 'The Fly Paper'. I don't recall that title. Where can I find it? |

Des, my mother is a great Elizabeth Taylor enthusiast (the novelist I mean, not the actress). There are two other collections (at least), plus a 'best short stories'. Enjoy! |

Thanks, Joel. Your characters should sometimes have a cup of tea. :-) |
