Anyone else seen this one? Just watched it and really enjoyed it. Pretty well acted, nasty - grotesque, really; even hard to watch in places -, intesne and refreshingly different. Overall, it was much better than I expected. |

A caveat: the above is only true if you're willing to suspend disbelief and go with it. the film is completely OTT, but if you're willing to give it some leeway it's well worth a viewing. |

Saw about two-thirds of it at a friend's house on Xmas Eve, Zed, then had to go- pity, because I was genuinely enjoying it. Really bloody good, I thought. Looking forward to watching the rest of it at some point! |

I enjoyed this a while back - thought I'd mentioned it here, but looking back it seems I didn't. It is indeed OTT but still has something. |

It sounds like an old Tarzan film to me... Er, that's a good thing. |

I rather liked THE RUINS. It's tight, and it's contained to pretty much one location. It had some nicely disturbing reveals (e.g., the cellphone down the shaft). An example of a good little horror film they occasionally produce.... |

Loved the novel, did not care much for the film. The film was actually pretty fateful, and Smith wrote the screenplay, but somehow the film was a dissapointment for me. It didn't feel like Dharius was behind the camera on this one- he otherwise always does sublime camera work. |

I really enjoyed the film. It has an air of the fantastic that most modern horror films don't. Reminded me of a Clark Ashton Smith tale (I think it was him) about killer plants. |

Read the novel on a ferry heading to Norway in winter. I was very far away from the north sea during the reading of that book- his other novel 'A Simple Plan' (ten years ago I think!) was also a great novel and an excellent film. The screenplay was Oscar nominated I believe- Maybe thats why I am a little tough on the Ruins I guess. |

The Seed from the sepulchre is my fave CAS tale. It's unforgettable and still powerful. It also feels different from the usual CAS story. I read the Ruins novel and I thought it was standard american horror for the masses. But it sort of entertained me, as I read it to the end (I give up on many novels after a few chapters). Haven't seen the movie yet. |

> Good you didn't hurl the book across the room then Tom! There is this anecdote I once read about Stanley Kubrick (perhaps like many anecdotes about him it is a fabrication): one day he was going through piles of books to get an idea for a new film, typically he literally threw them against the wall after browsing a few minutes. At one point a secretary next door noticed that she hadn't heard books hitting the wall for a while, and she came to check if everything was ok. She found Stanley reading The Shining. |

I like that story Tom. I'm feeling very restless at the moment. Finally picked up D.H.Lawrence and settled down for a read. |

I’ve just seen The Ruins & loved it! It’s rare that I disagree with my good friend Zed about a movie and I certainly intend to give Drag Me To Hell another go at some point, so it was a relief to me to see we’re still attuned to the wonderful world of daft quality horror movies as I have to wholeheartedly agree with his comments at the beginning of this thread. A confined setting, some likeable characters and some over the top, toe curling mayhem that had me laughing out loud in gleeful horror at several points. Highly recommended, especially as it featured one of my favourite horror movie characters – the medical student who suggests the most appalling solutions to individuals’ predicaments. More fun than Mad Doctor of Blood Island - this is the kind of thing Eddie Romero would have made in the early 70s if he'd had a budget, talent, and some actual actors |

I quite enjoyed it. Did nobody else think of Machen, what with the singing flowers? |

Well, I kept hearing how terrible it was, so was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. |

I was surprised at the negative press it received - 90 minutes of cinematic fun. |
