The reviewer is noting that THE WOLF MAN has poor continuity where the transformations are concerned. Ramsey has noted elsewhere that everything about this film is good except the rubbish semi-wolf. A great werewolf film MUST repeat MUST have a wolf and not an actor in a wolf costume. It must feature a person turning into a wolf, not a person becoming hirsute and toothy and sloping like a drunk on a bad hair day. Wolves are wolves. And yes, I know it's not easy to train them. Has anyone really made that happen?

I understand about the whole 'wolf' thing, but I used to love the old Wolfman, the hairy faced guy. He used to look like my dad what with his seventies sideburns and stuff.
What I meant was I bet we used to notice that the werewolf was something of a natty dresser for one so wolfy (mind you - he wasn't as bad as Henry Hull; he used to pop on a hat and scarf on his way out).

Not sure I agree with that - THE HOWLING is a great werwolf movie. As is DOG SOLDIERS. CURSE OF THE WOLFMAN is possibly the best werewolf film ever made, and that has Olly reed ina torn shirt and white chest rug.

Films like THE WOLFMAN are easy targets. Back then, the effects were very basic. I do agree that using a wolf would've been much more effective, though.

?!? - I can only think you're kidding Zed, because - and this coming from a big Hammer fan, and a big Oliver Reed fan, and a big werewolf fan - CURSE OF THE WOLFMAN (WEREWOLF?) is a gigantic turd, boring as hell.

... Or wouldn't you agree, Mr. Probert?...

I think it's excellent. Not a dull moment in it.

The real problem with the original Wolfman is surely that minor characters, having seen the transformed Larry Talbot, report that they saw a wolf. It's worth noting (as I did in my introduction to the novelisation) that in the original script the transformation is seen only from Talbot's viewpoint, as a reflection.

My favourite werewolf story, James Blish's "There shall be no Darkness" was turned into a movie in the early seventies, THE BEAST MUST DIE. With Peter Cushing as a 'lycanthropy enthusiast', no less. Anybody seen this?

To my cost, Hubert. About the only thing I recall is that Subotsky was unhappy not to get a British X certificate and had to put in a gore shot to obtain one.

What I liked most about the story, apart from its sense of compassion, is the pseudo-scientific explanation of lycanthropy. A pity they couldn't turn it into a decent film.
