Just watched this over the weekend. Amazing atmosphere, hasn't it? In places it felt directed by James Whale. So vivid it felt lived in, as if the crew had gone to this odd, rich world and just filmed it. Also it felt as far removed from this world as LOTR or Harry Potter - perhaps more, to be honest. The humour has dated somewhat to the extent it might as well be in some foreign language, but not throughout. It was still funny but also sweet, and showed me there was really nothing new in comedy - it was so Father Ted it was unbelievable, just shorn of a few blue words and modernities. Smashing film. (And the danger! There was a bit at the beginning where an old couple roll off a train platform and onto some tracks - it looked like it was going to be incredibly painful, but then the camera cut just before impact. Horrible, it looked.) |

Excellent film that; Hay's best by a wide margin - Ask A Policeman is still pretty good though. |

This is one of my favourite films. I love the interplay between the actors and the atmosphere is excellent. I might watch it myself this week sometime. |

Why don't these shows get shown on telly any more? There's a bunch of Hay movies that are really good. GHOSTS OF ST MICHAELS, is that one? And as Mick says, ASK A POLICEMAN. Don't mention Cannon and Ball, mind . . . You've get me nipple, Tommy. |

It's rare that they'll show a black and white film on the telly nowadays - the kids won't stand for them. When someone's off school sick nowadays, they can't discover the pleasures of Will Hay or Frankie Howerd's The Runaway Bus, like I did. Poor buggers. They have to make do with Deal or No Deal. |

GHOST OF ST MICHAELS' is indeed another good'un. There's a nice DVD set that has nine of his films on it:- http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/6080364/The-Will-Hay-Collection/Product.html It hasn't got ST MICHAELS' on it - that's on this set:- http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/3384441/Will-Hay-Collection/Product.html As for monochrome films, Film4 does a reasonable job of showing 'forties thrillers, mostly US but occasionally UK. BBC4 showed OH MR PORTER t'other week, but it's not on that often nowadays. Even Laurel & Hardy aren't on that much now, I don't think. It should be law that L&H are on TV daily. |
