Is anyone going on the 31st Jan. I'm pretty skint but am going to try. Not sure about coming back by train on the same night though. Might stay over. http://s256537080.websitehome.co.uk/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=17&topic =1781.0 |

I tried to buy the book from the Solaris website yesterday but couldn't see how to do so. Any clues? |

I was going to attend, but the credit crunch has thwarted me, too. Gary, I got the book from the Amazon.co.uk website - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Poe-Ellen-Datlow/dp/184416652X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=book s&qid=1232483285&sr=8-1 £5.13, with free delivery. |

It's hard isn't it. The train fare will probably cost about £65ish and then there is a hotel, food and beer. I'll still keep trying to go though. York BFS Open night is on the 28th Feb now and nothing on earth is going to stop me from going to the York Brewery. Christmas was awful with all of my family being ill with viruses - perhaps I can make up with it with a pint of the Centurian's Ghost and Black Bess in York. |

I think I might treat myself to that. York's not too far in the car. |

Yep. It's out in paperback now. I also just preordered this dvd: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hky53gXyjX0 This is a must-see. The guy who wrote the book has been living under armed guard for over 2 years. |

I don't know anything about this film. Some of the comments on Youtube indicate it is 'sick', so it has piqued my interest. |

It's about the mafia in Naples. Unglamorised, unflinching. Written by a guy who worked in low-level jobs for them and wrote what he saw. Both book and film are meant to be amazing. |

Jeez, I thought Salman Rushdie had it bad, when he wrote The Satanic Verses... |

It's a very powerful film – I'd certainly recommend it. If it's 'sick' then telling the truth is sick. There's no glamourisation or titillation here, just a realistic portrayal of wealthy businessmen for whom corruption, violence and coercion are a way of life. The scene in which a business meeting takes place to plan and finance the illegal dumping of toxic waste, and the subsequent scene in which a driver accidentally splashed with acid is denied medical help, are chilling revelations of the casual brutality of corporate crime. |

Saw an interview about the author and the mafia on The Culture Show the other night. Really interesting. He was asked (knowing that the mafia are after him now) would he have written it in the first place? He said that the writer in him still says yes but so many problems caused. |

GOMORRAH has garnered some great film reviews and the promise of awards. Read up on it in S&S a while back, an article that really piqued my interest. |

Damn! If it was the week after, I get paid then. Then again, it's also the weekend of my birthday, so I'd probably be too busy getting trolleyed on Black Bush. So it goes. Bugger, all the same. |
