Anyone hear this on radio 7? The latest play, The White Hare, was one of the creepiest and yet most magically atmospheric things I've heard in ages. A juicy half hour and one that makes me wonder why we're not all going on about it in horror/radio world.

I have to say, it works great in a darkened bedroom at midnight, when it's actually aired.

for example, with a little cable you could loop back the audio out from your soundcard to the line in and then use a freeware audio program like Audacity to record any audio.
Alternatively there are softwares that can let you record anything that would be sent to the soundcard. I have one of those on my mac ("Wiretap"). I recently used it to record a streaming live concert.
Or, more old fashioned, you could connect the audio output of your computer to your hifi and record it on a cd if you have a cd writer, and later import it again as mp3.

Brilliant, Tom! Why didn't I think of that first example? This feels like one of those moments when The Doctor realises how to tech a solution to something! Time to run down corridors and plug stuff in...

There's a lovely morsel of free software called "Audacity" which can record anything that goes into your microphone jack as an mp3 or wav file:

I think Audacity should be able to capture a web stream as well; unfortunately I can't get it to do that at the moment...

Listening to it right now, Tony. Just now they're sheltering from a storm in a ruin. That could be any horror story, couldn't it?

I've got a lot of those man in black plays in mp3. The most successful of them are oblique and surprising.

Yeah, quirky. The ones that don't work feel like Tales from the Crypt stories, boring divine ironic revenge tales.

Looping the output back into the computer mic jack works! Fantastic!

That's a great idea, about the loop from the line out to the mic jack! Can't believe I never thought of that before, myself. There are loads of good radio stuff that I never bother with because I only have the time to listen to them while I commuting.

The quality won't be great, although it will work. Programs such as 'Audacity' mentioned above will record 'what you hear' so it'll save a file of the streamed program that can then be saved or bunged* on a CD.

The White Hare was good. It had something the old "Man in Black"s lacked -- ambiguity.

I've only taped that so far. One thing: using Audacity you've got to turn off the option to play as you record or you'll get an echo.

Hmm. Maybe I'll try and get that lead today and record it. Yes - ambiguity, and not just revenge again. But more than that there was a sense of the landscape in the story, and so much atmosphere, and little snatches of dialogue that suggested the characters had interior lives and thoughts.

I must give it another listen with the ending in mind. It's always tricky to communicate ideas from the mouths of characters with natural-sounding dialogue.
