A friend of ours went to buy some kittens for his daughter the other night. The place he had to go was this remote, ancient farmhouse. It was night, and dark and cold inside the place, and the only person living there was the owner, this chap in his seventies. They got talking and up came the subject of ghosts. The man told our friend that the place was full of them, that they hardly let him rest. He saw them watching tv, sitting in his car (a woman and a little girl), and once visitors came to his house and got talking to a man in the garden who told them their friend was out. He wore odd clothes including cords with string round the ankles. When he finished talking he walked through the wall in front of their eyes. Our friend is a complete skeptic, but had his disbeleifs shaken by this man, who seemed lucid and intelligent, and not one to take crap. He said he wasn't at all scared of the ghosts, just that they kept appearing.
I'd love to see this place, though I'm sure it'll only be in the form of a story...

I always wonder what people actually mean when a ghost walks through a wall. Does it fade into the wall or does it remain sharp, passing through each little contour of the wall's surface?

Why does the article mention the Catholic church specifically? Doesn't the Protestant church also do exorcisms? Surely the exorcism game has been privatised?

Protestant church doesn't do exorcisms on the whole. Not in the same way that the catholic church does, and despite what the movies tell you the catholics are much less bell, book and candle than they used to be. Mainly exorcisms take the form of praying with the person concerned, rather than screaming at them and sprinkling them with holy water. The only exorcism story that I've heard from an Anglican priest, my Father, is rather fun. When we used to live in Huthwaite in the late 70s-to 80s Dad used to keep an open house when he was in, so any parishoner could come and chat. Anyway, Dad was in his study talking to a colleague and a little girl ran into the study shouting: "Vicar, come quick. Me mam says we've got a ghost."
So, Dad follows said girl to a house which is shaking. Plates are falling off the dresser, pictures are juddering on the walls, the whole house is booming. So, Dad takes a look around, picks up the phone. Calls the coal mining board and asks them whether they're blasting seems in the area. Turned out they were. So, alas, Dad didn't get to do a Max von Sydow.

Apparitions' Martin Shaw didn't plump for the 'coal board mining explosion' excuse. He looked beneath the mundane.

Satan wears many disguises. :-)
