Can anyone tell me in which collection or anthology this tale appears? I can't seem to track it down, and am desperate to read it.

Cheers.

Haven't a clue. I'm still seeking a copy of that Bloch Lovecraftian tale - Notebook Found...Somewhere.

Hopeless, I am. Hopeless.

"Notebook Found in a Deserted House" can be found in TALES OF THE CTHULHU MYTHOS (Arkham House, 1990), which, as far as I know, is still available.

That's in Arkham House's Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos matey. Probably a lot of other places too.

There have been paperback reprints in the USA (Roc?) and in the UK (Grafton).

'The Button Molder' (sic) is more elusive. It was published in a special Leiber issue of WHISPERS magazine and reprinted in the omnibus collection THE LEIBER CHRONICLES. It's in one of the John Pelan-edited Leiber volumes from a few years ago, probably THE BLACK GONDOLIER (I'll check when I get home). I'm not aware of any anthology appearances, but there may be some.

It's worth seeking out. A quiet, unique tale of loneliness and the urban landscape.

WHISPERS III and FANTASY ANNUAL III, according to Locus, both from '81. I'm pretty sure I have FA-III here somewhere... edited by Terry Carr... anyway, great story....

Joel, the story isn't in THE BLACK GONDOLIER. It must be in the other, more difficult to find, volume.

The Del Rey reprint of the Arkham House volume (same title) might be more readily available:

Zed, 'The Button Molder' was the story I chose to represent Fritz Leiber in a potential 'favourite ghost stories' anthology a while ago, over on the All Hallows discussion group. I think it's one of his very best (the gradual build-up of menacing hints to a hair-raising climax is beautifully done), not as well-known as 'Smoke Ghost' and 'The Girl With the Hungry Eyes', but every bit their equal. Aside from the Whispers special (which has a wonderful ghostly photo of Leiber) and the Terry Carr anthology, it was included in the Midnight House collection Smoke Ghost and Other Apparitions.

Hm. That means I've read it, and don't remember it. I'll have to crack open my copy of Smoke Ghost when I get home.
