For me as a child nothing said Sunday afternoon teatime better than those old BBC adaptations set in gloomy country houses cast with a mixture of well known sitcom faces, some unfamiliar ones, and a few people you know could't really be employed doing anything else. Well I got a blast of (admittedly rather more adult-orientated) nostalgia this afternoon having been able to get my hands on this pretty unobtainable low budget 70s Brit horror item that I've wanted to see for years. Made by Jose Larraz just before he made 'Vampyres' this is yet another tale of women confined to a grim country house in the middle of nowhere where it's always raining and even if you were the most well-disposed person in the world you too would probably end up slashing all and sundry until you were in a bloodstained catatonic state by the finale as well. I thought it was great - one of those movies were almost nothing happens but the house and the countryside are extremely spooky and the little nods to madness are nicely done. Larraz made a couple of nice movies before descending into the kind of horror-porn tat that featured orgies with goats and people being uncermoniously skewered up the bottom and I shall not dirty this board with mention of such low-rent rubbish here. But this is one of his very good ones and it deserves someone giving at a proper DVD release. Anyone else a fan of Larraz (not the goat or bottom stuff, obviously)? |

There's an excellent blog post on Deviation on Esotika Erotica Psychotica: http://esotika.blogspot.com/2007/10/deviation-jose-larraz-1971.html I haven't seen Symptoms (or any goat-bottom stuff), but I remember the weird eye contact sex scene from Deviation when I saw it years ago. (Alas, I remember little else, but that scene was oddly unsettling.) |
