Interesting psychological case study:

Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: 'Free to good home. You want it, you take it.'

For three days the fridge sat there without even one person looking twice at it. He eventually decided that people were too un-trusting of this deal.

It looked too good to be true, so he changed the sign to read: 'Fridge for sale $50.'

The next day someone stole it.

I've heard that a few times over many years - I always thought it was one of those apocryphal tales that usually starts "here, guess what happened to a mate of mine..."

I think it's illustrative of the way we value things according to their financial worth alone. A nice little fable for our times.

Very much so - similar to furniture sellers proclaiming 50% off, when they've recently (for 28 days, of course) doubled the price - it's perceived as good value suddenly when it's just being sold for the old price.

Or authors selling their books at half-price when they have complete printing control of them and can make 76p profit on every copy sold. :-)
