Gray Friar Press newsletter March 2009

Plenty to mention this time, folks, so here goes . . .

First up, our latest book is now in stock and shipping. THE CATACOMBS OF FEAR is John Llewellyn Probert's sequel to the ridiculously addictive THE FACULTY OF TERROR. These books (which I hope will form an ongoing series) are Amicus-style horror film anthologies in prose. Five wicked stories linked by a deliciously fiendish framework tale. It's the most fun you can have without hurting yourself. Check out the striking cover and read the blurb here:

THE CATACOMBS OF FEAR
Only £8 / $14 (plus P&P)
ORDER NOW: http://www.grayfriarpress.com/catalogue/catacombs.html

To tie in with this release, Gray Friar Press has just signed up the Catacombs author to provide regular film reviews to a new page on the website. So join John Llewellyn Probert in his CATACOMBS OF FILM. Bookmark the page!
http://www.grayfriarpress.com/films/index.html

Secondly, some news relating to the proprietor: Gary Fry's first collection of short stories THE IMPELLED AND OTHER HEAD TRIPS didn't really get the start in life it deserved. However, the original publisher has recently ceased trading and has bequeathed the files to Gray Friar Press, so now the book - with intro by Ramsey Campbell - is re-available at an uttely absurd half-price:

THE IMPELLED AND OTHER HEAD TRIPS
Only £5 / $8 (plus P&P)
ORDER NOW: http://www.grayfriarpress.com/catalogue/impelled.html

Bargains: the Gray Matter novellas - Conrad Williams, Steve Vernon, Nicholas Royle - are proving popular and we're happy to encourage folk to collect them. Each is numbered and the whole set is now made more affordable by our reduced prices on multiple purchases. If you want to buy any two of the paperbacks, we're offering them at £12 (plus £3 P&P) / $20 ($5 P&P). Or buy all three at £17 (plus £4 P&P) / $28 (plus $6 P&P). That's a nice saving. ORDER HERE (just write which titles you would like in the PayPal box): http://www.grayfriarpress.com/graymatter.html

Incidentally, everybody buying a book from Gray Friar Press will now receive a free
PDF copy of our Christmas chapbook, which contains rare* or original stories from
Royle*, Williams*, Finch, McMahon, Probert, Strantzas* and Fry.

More news: work on Simon Bestwick's first out-and-out horror story collection PICTURES OF THE DARK continues, with a May release date in mind . . . and believe me, folks, this book is crucial genre reading. Conrad Williams is writing the introduction. We'll keep you updated on progress and preorders.

We've just signed up another author to our stable - the first woman Gray Friar Press will publish in complete book form. Oh, and the book - also our first novel - is something special indeed. Currently negotiating intro-writer and contracts, so once we have things signed and sealed we'll let you know who this award-winning author is . . .

And for all you authors who recently submitted book proposals to me, thanks. I'll review each proposal this month and reply to you asap. I simply wanted to give the pitches time to come in (we're still open, by the way, so don't be shy).

Okay, I think that's all. Stay well and best wishes -

Gary Fry

Some great stuff, Gary. Being an Amicus fan, I'm sold on John's collections.

It's encouraging to see an active small press in an age where many are dropping like flies in winter. (One would think that some of these speciality presses would ponder that perhaps focusing on a line of $150 tray-cased cloth-bound hardcovers might not be the only way to run a specialty press. They could take a radical approach and release books that people outside the usual band of hardcore collectors might actually *buy* and *read*. But I digress...)

Good work. Congratulations to all the authors.

Thanks for comments, too.

It's good to see things happening at GFP again, Gary.

Best of luck with the forthcoming titles.

I think I have all your catalogue anyway, but I'm always on the lookout for some quality fiction.

I've got most of the GF press books too Steve. Every now and again I buy more for birthday and Christmas presents to try to get the numbers sold from small presses up. Every sale counts.

Difficult to know how to get more sales going outside our groups though. Advertising on the forums works to an extent but as we have discussed before there has to be more of a market out there that small press publishers can't get to because of no advertising budget, hefty discounts demanded etc.

Well it can't be Sarah Pinbrough because she hasn't won an award yet.

Has Gary given us a clue in the past - someone whom he has mentioned before? Is she American?

A clue! A clue!

Did you see that interview he gave on Dutch TV shortly after being sacked from the Engerland job?

Oh, talk about car-crash television. He started using this peculiar accent, eccentuating odd words. It was painful to watch.

Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZnoP4sUV90&feature=related

What was going through his mind??
