Is this a world record? I've just had a tooth extracted which took 75 minutes to complete. I feel like butchered meat from the gums outwards. I'll survive. With painkillers and anti-biotics. But Horror stories are nothing compared. :|

75 minutes! Surely that counts as cruel and unusual, Des. Hope your recovery is a swift one.

Ouch! 75 minutes is quite a long time indeed. I hope you feel better soon, Des. Make sure you get something strong enough to dull the pain. NSAIDs like ibuprofen mixed with codeine or similar stuff can help with dental pain, I've found.

I had a molar removed a few years ago and it took about an hour. The guy started by giving me a shot in my gum, but when he started working on the tooth I could still feel it, and he had to keep giving me more shots (I seem to have a high tolerance for anesthetics). He had a damn hard time getting it out - he was wrenching and twisting so hard I could see him sweating. He had to call for an assistant at one point to get better leverage! I left the clinic with a little bag of paracetamol which was utterly useless for that kind of pain, but luckily I had some leftover codeine/ibuprofen tablets, and they helped a bit. Strangely, my strong pills (which I take for my spine problems) hardly helped with the tooth pain at all.

Joel, what was that Christopher Fowler story you recommended to me when I was going to the dentist some time ago? I forget the title...

Try Myc Harrison's "The Abscess". It's in The 17th Pan Book of Horror Stories. By no means an easy read if you have a toothache.

I hope you're feeling better, Des.

I bet the dentist looked down in the mouth, too.

(SORRY!)

I hope for a speedy recovery. That was a long trip to the dentist's!

I will never forget this poster I once saw at a dentist, (I think I saw it when I was seven or eight). The poster was supposed to encourage kids to have healthy, strong teeth etc- so they had this illustration of a dentist extracting a tooth from the mouth of a child. Thing is that the kid's cranium was sliding out of the stretched mouth with the tooth. In a dentist's waiting room this piece of brilliant comedy had a very different effect...

Thanks. The pain - touch wood - is less that I expected this morning.
The dentist had to pull out two long roots following the tooth itsef - yank and crunch, yank and crunch...

Hi Des! Remember Ramsey's tale "THIS TIME" about a tootache opening to supernatural vengeance?
I wish you a fast recovery.
