Book news from an author whose work has provoked such critical reactions as "Oh no it's him"...

My collection from Ex Occidente Press is now called THE TERRIBLE CHANGES, and will be published in late May. It contains fourteen previously uncollected stories, two of them new. Full details, including a breathtakingly strange cover by Franciszek Starowieyski, are now on the Ex Occidente Press website (in the 'Catalogue' section, not the 'Future' section).

Also, I have completed the first draft of my novel MIDNIGHT BLUE after a mere five years. Now I have to type up and revise most of it. Watch this space...

Oh no it's him.

Actually, Joel, I just ordered a copy of The Lost District two days ago. Now I'm really behind. Write slower, damn you. :-)

Write slower? It took him five years to write a novel! Any slower and he'd freeze up like those journos in Martin Amis' The Information. :-)

If you think taking five years to write a novel is slow, wait til you see what I'm capable of, my friend. I'm world-class slow. Turtles pass me in a blur. Snails zoom past. Parked cars whiz by. Five years? Five years is nothing. It takes me five years to put in a comma. :-)

Would that be an Oxford comma Chris?

The only book I'm looking forward to as much as this one is the next Campbell.

Bravo, Joel. The world needs more of your fiction. And so do I, dammit!

Great title, and even better cover. Can't say I'd ever come across Franciszek Starowieyski, but some of his stuff is exactly the right mix of beautiful/bizarre that's always appealed to me.

Google the name and check out the image results ...

The world needs more Joel, full stop. Let's clone him...

I'm very much looking forward to this one - for me, it promises to be the best of the Ex Occidente titles by contemporary authors.

It's a retrospective that goes back as far as 1985! Allowed me to include some low-key and quite personal stories I'd always liked but which didn't fit the remit of THE LOST DISTRICT. Very much a selection made from the perspective of where I am now and what I want to do in the future. I hope people enjoy it.

Recently I've had two bad reviews of other books: one claiming my work is too obscure, another claiming that it's too obvious. Next, I expect the criticism that it's RED DWARF.

Congratulations, Joel! Very welcome news. The cover art is striking, as I'm sure the tales will be.
