I get the feeling the whole movie will actually suck. But you know, I've learned to appreciate trailers as mini-movies. And this is a pretty good mini-movie. It's creepy... and unintentionally pretty funny, too....

Can't let my own lonely thread go uncommented on, so I'll provide a tangent - I saw an orphan ghost movie I've been long trying to get on Netflix (the wait on this was the longest I've ever encountered!) - THE CHANGELING (1980), starring George C. Scott. My review, in sum?... Boring, cliché-ridden, overwrought garbage.

Nonsense. The Changeling is an eerie little gem of a film.

I agree with Huw. The seance scene alone is bizarre and creepy as hell.

I loved that seance scene, Zed. The scenes with the ball and the wheelchair were really well done too.

I didn't find The Changeling 'boring' at all. As for 'cliche-ridden', it doesn't matter if a film uses familiar tropes as long as they are done well (and in this film, they were). And 'overwrought'? I thought it was fairly understated and subtle, and George C. Scott's performance was excellent.

I couldn't agree more, Huw. Scott is a tremendous actor, and here he was brilliant.

He was a marvellous actor (and my all-time favourite Scrooge). He was also superb in Exorcist III (but not so great in Firestarter).

Your turn to agree with Huw again, Zed....

The seance scene was the only good sequence - she was one of the better mediums in film. But the film itself loses all its momentum the moment we see that flashback: at that point, to use a King analogy, we've seen fully the monster behind the door, and the movie waxes tedious from there, right to its "overwrought" (chandeliers swinging, wheelchairs chasing people, etc.) ending. There's more reasons why I think it fails, but I will restrain myself....

I love Huw; he's a fox. Of course I'm going to agree with him.

Hey! Don't go cheatin' on me, Zed!

Throw in another "pro" vote for the Changeling for me.

THE HAUNTING is a great ghost-house movie. THE INNOCENTS is a sublime ghost-house movie. THE SHINING is a terrifying and superb ghost-house movie. THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL is a laughably-entertaining ghost-house movie....

This is a pile of dog-poo ghost-house movie. Though, I will amend: until and through the seance, it has some potential. From the moment of the "flashback" through to the end, the movie has jumped its own shark and goes down like a plane on fire in a mixed-metaphor sentence....

Of course this is Craig talking, so when he says The Haunting, he's not talking about the seminal Robert wise classic, he's talking about the crappy Liam Neeson special; effects shitty remake.

You got so carried away with the "shitty"s and the "crappy"s, Weber, that you blew your semi-colon there....

If I actually NEED to say I'm talking about the Robert Wise film and not the "shitty" "crappy" remake, then man do I have a reputation to fix....

I've enjoyed with a guilty glee the remakes of Hollywood horror films, lately... but that was one that was un-watchable....

When I first saw THE CHANGELING with my father at the cinema years ago, I left feeling more or less like Craig. Funny, though, that over the years I've grown fonder of the film and now I consider it one of my favorites. If pressed I'd say I still think it has a weak ending -- too many loose ends tied up, I guess -- but for me the film has power enough for me to overlook its few weaknesses.

Watched a Spanish film last night -- THE UNINVITED GUEST. A creepy premise and several unpredicatable developments. Reminded me at times of BAD RONALD, the old TV-movie from the seventies, but I suppose my UK friends won't know about that? At any rate, now that I've had a night to think about it, let me just say that I was impressed. Anyone else seen this?

Sorry. I suppose that last post needs a new thread. I'll do that next.
