How did that happen?

Ah well, I've jotted down a few random thoughts on hitting this milestone: http://www.garymcmahon.com/

Your thread title is just an open invitation to Joel . . .

C'mon, make him work harder.

Happy 400th, Zed!

Wait a minute...wrong number of zeros there. What I meant to write was:

Happy 4,000th, Zed!

Ah, that's better. Cheers, gramps!

Happy b'day.

Happy Birthday indeed, Zed!

The late thirties are messy - just look at the numbers - 38, 39 - too curvy, too tangly - but 40 - straight lines and an empty circle of nothing - a nice, fresh start....

The zero in 40 is there because now that he's an old man, that's Gary's body shape.

Completely round.

I had a birthday last week. (Christ, not another one! The do tend to come faster and faster.) I'm not saying how old I am, suffice it to say that next to me Gary is a snot.

But not to worry, you'll all get there eventually.

31, 33, 37 and 39 are fine. Odd numbers and angles are safe (but not multiples of 5). 40's a terrible number and I think I'll skip it and go straight to 41 when it's my turn!

So I'll wish you a premature happy 41st, Zed!

Zed - my life didn't even really begin till I was 40. I can still remember it, finding that book in that tiny little shop in Whitechapel, suggesting that the way to immortality was to kill a few prostitutes while chanting certain rituals and making obeisance to certain deities. In fact I still have the top hat and cane, but the red silk lining of my cloak has seen better days. In fact now I only wear it to...

I've said enough

Happy Birthday my friend!

I just picked up the Mammoth Book of Best New Horror 19 today and you're in it, Gary!

(Mammoth/old --> insert gag into earhole, turn crank)

Really pleasantly surprised to see your name, Joel's and Simon's along with Ramsey's. At least you can't say you haven't accomplished anything by 40.

Jeez, at least get it right, lads. The "from hell" letter referencing "half the Kidne" ended with "Signed, Catch me when you can Mishter Lusk".

"Yours truly" was used in the "Dear Boss" letter.

Also remember: you're not actually IN your 40's, until you're 41. You're still in your 30's - 1 runs from birth to age 1, then 1 to 2, and so on... so the 10th, part of the first set of 10, is the ENTIRE year 10 - so until you're 41, you're still in your 30's....

This is a little bit of tortured logic I like to call: comforting.

You've got to be careful with birthdays, they're bad for you. It's been proven that the more you have the more likely you are to pop your clogs

Craig, you've got it backwards. When you turn 1 you have FINISHED your first year. And when you turn 40 you have FINISHED your 40th year. You're actually starting your 41st.

Just like the we're IN 21st century, Zed is IN his 41st year...

A little something I like to call: extra anxiety.

A, why do you have to put the negative spin on it?... I was trying to comfort him by taking the reverse-view - you don't have go throw cold water on the fact he's decrepitly one-foot-in-the-grave....
