Went into a secondhand bookstore, run by a charity, on the south coast this week. Bought a bunch of books for 50p each, too nice to turn down. Most of them lovely paperbacks, printed on very good stock paper.

Penguin annotated edition of HUCK FINN.

Penguin annotated edition of BLEAK HOUSE.

An omnibus of Chandler's final three novels.

Charles L Grant's collection TALES FROM THE NIGHTSIDE (Futura edition).

James Lee Burke's first novel, which I'm not sure has been published in the UK (this was the US Hyperion paperback edition).

And Eric Brown's paperback original SF novel, HELIX.

Sat on the beach afterwards and watched the waves paddle ashore, call of the gulls above us as the haze across the Channel played tricks with the coastline of France. Nice day really.

Very nice!

I picked up a mint condition run of The Year's Best Horror Stories (the Gerald Page / Karl Edward Wagner edited DAW books) last weekend for a pound a copy (the prices inside the cover said £14 each but the girl at the desk assured me they were a quid so who was I to argue?)

Jeez, I'd love the whole series of those, John. I've got the odd entry here and there, but to get them in one go is mouthwatering.

And I had a rather nice one yesterday. Found a signed, numbered (actually the last number of the numbered editions), limited edition proof of James Herbert's ONCE... in another charity bookstore. Funnily enough, just having had to endure a bit of a bore behind the counter go on about how he knew the value of the books and how he was very good at the pricing. Anyway, he only blanched slightly when I bought the book for the quid he'd marked it down as . . . Result for me anyway.

Think I bought those as they came out! Are the first three or so UK publications?

...and how many do you have? Can't recall the last one, but I still have a stack in a box in the garage...
