A fieldwork trip to Seville turned out to be suitably macabre. The first night I and my colleagues sought out a nice restaurant in the old town and eventually landed up at the Hotel of the Mythical Don Juan (well, where else would we go?). So we sat down outside to eat, ordered and enjoyed. Then we heard some frantic screaming from the next table, at which two couples were sitting. One of the women was shouting, "Anton! Anton!" and crying. Anyway, it turned out that the guy had choked on a fishbone from his paella. There he sat, dead. A corpse beside me. Then, amid more cries of "Medico! Medico!" a waiter shot out of the building, grabbed the guy and gave him the Heimlich Maneouvre. I doubt the guy was actually dead, but he sure looked that way - mouth open, eyes glaring, unmoving with his arms limp at his sides - and his missus was certainly convinced. So there you have it: my first night in Seville. It had a real life resurrection.

Yikes! There's a short story for you in that ordeal, Gary, I'm certain of it.

Yeah, I got molested by a woman trying to sell me a sprig of rosemary. She read my palm in Spanish and said I could have the rosemary for nothing. When she'd done she was holding open her purse and saying in perfect English, "No coins, only notes."

I really wanted to take her palm and say, "See this line here - that's your life line, and it's very short. In fact, I confidentally predict that you'll die in five minutes if you don't fuck off."

But I'm far too nice.

Oh yes, and then I wandered haphazardly into a full-on Catholic ceremony in the Salvadore Church. All congregational eyes turned to this wan fella with a digital camera shooting the quaint ceiling. I buggered off when the waifers arrived.

Passed Seville Cathedral when the bells were ringing and had a truly surreal experience looking up. That building is friggin awesome.

Also visited the square in which the Spanish Inquisition was begun. Disarmingly innocuous.

No, mate, he was still quite hungry.

>>>Was it hot? When I was in Seville it was about 50 degrees centrigrade (I think).

Tolerably so. About 35 degrees.
