I've been in manchester today for a meeting, and popped into the Waterstones on Deansgate on my way back to Manchester Victoria train station...wow, that place has some impressive horror section; it took my back to the bookshops of my teens.

Loads of Campell. Mark Morris. Conrad Williams. Lots of Jack Ketchum. They even had some small press books in there: my mate James Cooper's novel, a few Telos titles, and , best of all, a clutch of Humdrumming books. Niiice. I almost spent 50 quid, then put all the books back on the shelves when I realised that I'm skint. :-/

Good for Manchester - city of my birth.

I want to buy Thieving Fear and Simon Clark's Midnight Man.

Yeah, Michael Rowley, the main buyer, knows his onions.

Bull Running for Girls come out September and some of the stories are set in Manchester. Is he very approachable? My publisher could contact him. I know very little about this side of the business - don't the publishers, even the small press who can little afford it, have to pay to have their books stocked in the shops?

Hi Albie

I think I may well have a spare actually. I'll have to have a search but should be able to lay my hands on it. E-mail me at hoopyfrooddude[NO SPAM]@hotmail.com

Cheers

Jon

Really? Haha. I can't recall. Are you one of those who wants to pagger me?

My doctor says I should avoid being paggered, at least until the last paggering has worn off.

I was lying about the Boots tokens.

Dunno what paggered means. I don't really need any more books at the moment to be honest. I'm 90% certain I have a spare of this as I have the omnibus edition and that's all I need really. Anyway, it's your call.
Ally, sorry for not answering your question earlier. Michael Rowley is pretty approachable, yus, and will be able to answer your question about what publishers without a distributor do about getting their books into shops. He's based in the Manchester, Deansgate store
Our books are all distributed by the same company, I'm not sure how it works business-wise from their end about getting books into shops.

I expect that the big book stores would want a hefty chunk of anything though so perhaps it would cost the small press a fortune. I think Chris Teague has got into a few branches but more on a promotional than profit basis.

I just wanted to do a one off in Manchester where I have so many associations.
