To me and the fragrant Adriana... I'm 39 today, and feel nothing but a strange mute dread as death draws another year closer; these days I can almost see it peeking above the distant horizon.

Adriana is a lot younger, and hoefully less depressed.

Still, I got a Mighty Boosh T-shirt and fridge magnets. :-)

Your life begins in exactly one year. What you've experienced up till now has been merely a wan version of the truth. Prepare to suffer.

Oh, and happy birthday.

I feel really flat. I can't believe I'm almost 40. It's even taken the thrill away from my recent literary achievements.

Maybe some cheap wine and pockmarked whores will take the pain away...

Albs, in reality I'll bet you live in a large detached house in the country. You inherited a lordship title, smoke imported Cuban cigars, and run a chain of lapdancing bars in the Hull area.

Your real name is Reginald Alibaster Desiree and you enjoy English Breakfast tea and battenburg. All your friends are molluscs.

Happy birthday, Zed. You'll get used to the sense of futility: it comes with age. And no, cheap wine and pockmarked whores won't take the pain away – but they'll pass the time. Which, as Beckett observes, would have passed anyway.

Happy birthday Adriana!

And don't worry - I passed 40 and survived... after a fashion. ;-)

One of my best friends just died suddenly - he was only a couple of years older than me, in his mid-40s. Makes you realise how valuable and precarious life is.

HB, A&Z.

40? Wish I was 40. After that age, thankfully, the numbers become a sort of fug that don't mean anything anymore. The saddest thing is it becomes not only sad to ogle the armies of Agutter-esque schoolgirls in the shopping mall but something that teeters on paedophilic.

Today was such a fucked up day.

I wrote in the afternoon, which was mostly good.
Then I went to the Griffith Observatory, which was kinda a dream come true. There's no planetarium in Toronto, and for YEARS I've wanted to spend my birthday looking at the stars - so it finally happened which meant that I spent a solid 35 minutes in fucking heaven.

We almost didn't get in (got there late and they wouldn't sell us tickets, but my co-writer convinced them.)

But then went for dinner with my older sister and her stranger friends. And fought with her.
:-(

The meal cost more then a mortgage payment, and then I watched them all eat cake (which I couldn't eat due to my being DEATHLY allergic to dairy products.)

All and all it was a weird night. Got home early and opened a bottle of wine to drink on my own, but was SO depressed that after one glass decided I better put it away.

Found out yesterday that the funding for my draft isn't coming in, and am now scared to go home and face my life.

And also, can't remember the last time I had sex.

(I hope you had sex tonight, ZED!)

Okay, I'm rambling. Again. See - this is why it's best for me to stay away.
;)

I miss you guys though. I fucking do.

Comrade, I lurve ya. Beeg whooog, and Happy Fucking Birthday!

Gary: Don't feel bad about aging, brother. Just remember that life is pointless, brutal and short; so get out there and follow your bliss 'cause all our days are numbered.

And on that uplifting note...

Adriana: The pin-up tattoo would look great, but this lick-and-stick stuff is for kids. Blow the image up to two or three times its original size and go get it inked on your shoulder for real! That would be a great birthday present to yourself!

A - that really sucks about the day you had, and your script/Hollywood woes. Are you getting screwed by someone who promised to pay you for something you were writing, or did some funding not come through for the project that you're doing? Something else? You can tell me, I feel like I've been through it all. You have to be stoic, take it all with a steel jaw, or you'll go crazy-psycho. People really do lie to your face as easy as saying hello here - "Hello," he lied, as Linda Obst (I think it was) once put it (I used to think this level of flakey lying was exaggeration, but it's really not!).

Drink the wine if you have to, and start over again tomorrow. Don't worry about going away, even back to Canada: one of my writing partners did, a few years back, with much sadness... and now she's getting more opportunities than she ever did being out here.

See the movie THE HORSE'S MOUTH (1958), directed by Ronald Neame, with Alec Guiness. A great light-yet-deep comical look at the torment of art, and the artist.... Or do what I do, to get through some shit - make a mental rue-the-day list: people who will one day, some day, "rue the day." There's a LOT of people on MY rue-the-day list....

Craig- it's not for sure yet, but basically the Canadian Funding agency seems to want us to change the ending. Essentially write a totally different film if we want the scrip financing. Something we're not prepared to do - which means bye bye financial support. We have a meeting to confirm all this in 2 weeks though. Basically to hear in person just how much they DON'T get the film. This is all based on our treatment though, and frankly the script that were halfway through writing anyway (on spec) is something that I have faith we can make. So who knows, maybe when the draft is complete, we can find funds elsewhere (not Canada).

I'm fucking hungover. Or more just tired. Spent the night out at an after hours Raggae party. I didn't want to go but my co-writer kept yelling at me that I was "no fun." So I gave in. Spent until 6am dancing with sleazy men. Which wouldn't have bothered me if they'd at least been cute.
;)
Guys are a funny breed. I can't believe some of the things they say.

On the plus side, the music was great.

They locked us in though - the whole thing was behind a fake wall and to get out a guy had to unlock two chains. Weird...

I'm not familiar dealing with the Canadian funding arm of getting films made, A. My (sometimes) writing partner on a script is seeking, on another script, to extract funds from the Canadian government for a script she wrote; she's having to rewrite it to suit the producer she got "attached" to on the project... same demands, changing endings and other things to satisfy others, and not herself... writing is whoredom, to a certain extent, I gather, if one aspires to "make it"... probably in any field....

How I stay sane now, is to disbelieve everything everyone says in this town: disbelieve what they say, what their plans are, what they will do, what they can do, what they want, etc. Absolutely everything. If they say it's sunny outside, go buy an umbrella.

This is why God invented lawyers and contracts. Because people can't be trusted in any capacity whatsoever.

"Albie, feel free to send me those details. I can hardly remember... well... certain things.
;)

Sigh.

But seriously, pinup girls are so sexy. I could look at them all day..."

A doll's house on fire. Taped screams, slowed down, playing in the background. Someone smashing bottles outside in the street.

The garden of the doll's house made from hairy meat.

A pair of corduroy trousers floating through the wall. Star Wars playing in reverse in your mind.

Scary pamphlets piling up on the mat.

Thank you, Albie.

These affected me in different ways.
Some can be grouped and used together to create atmosphere.

However, some of them although individually good don't go together, e.g. The garden of the doll's house made from hairy meat. AND Scary pamphlets piling up on the mat.

Others do though:
Taped screams, slowed down, playing in the background. Someone smashing bottles outside in the street. Scary pamphlets piling up on the mat.
Those create an atmosphere of alienation and extreme loneliness touching the edges of madness.

Some of the others are simply through the looking glass as reality melts.

Blame Adriana. It was her conceptual orgy. I keep telling her not to mix her styles.

Last week it was: mime artist trapped in a real box, really trapped and really looking for a way out...then Carry on Camping upside down projected onto the skin of a white rhino as a candle painted to look like Ronald Reagen is eaten by squirrels in a little red plastic net.

I keep telling her.

But then she did spend a fortnight wandering the elf paths between here and there, and back again.

We had to show her snuff movies non stop for a week to get her anywhere near normal.

ARRRRGGGHHGHGHGHGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You mean you want MORE stories? I did write a couple last night. I should upload them somewhere.

Nope i don't have a homepage.
Just my blog and a story warehouse.

I wake up, watch Fraiser, go out, use the internet at the library use the internet at the BBC building. Go back to the library and read the papers, check out the books for new stuff, go home, watch TV, maybe write or read. Go to sleep in my chair, wake up to Fraiser...

Boring or what?

I've been doing this for several years. Although before it included booze and dope.

I bet you hang glide all day over volcanoes.

Large out of town shopping centres, especially with fake lakes, alarm me.

There's one in Aberdare nestled next to an enormous swamp with gently undulating reeds. Miles of them. It's very creepy when the sun is setting. It's as if somethings in there waiting and watching for kids to take a short cut.

Brrr.

Me too. For some reason new places can feel just as ghostly as old ones.
Have I mentioned the kids play area in our local shopping centre? It's indoors, you leave your kids there while you have a drink or some such. It's quite dark in there. One day my son says 'I don't like it in there - it feels creepy.' I tell a member of staff and she gives me a funny look; 'A woman who claimed to be psychic came in one day and told us there was a presence here,' she said, 'a little girl'.
The place is actually closed now; I see it when I go to work, all dark and shadowy. Do ghosts hang about in empty places? Do they go nuts in there?

They probably see ghost furniture and make weird landscapes out of ectoplasm...and make friends to play with. Shop window dummies strung up with ectoplasmic tendons jerking about.

I keep getting this image of a shopping centre in a part of town that is notably chavvy. I haven't been there since I was a kid. Don't know why it keeps coming up.

I have an aunt who lives out there who said to me that she keeps thinking about me. Maybe every time she shops there she sends a mental postcard of the place. Maybe I remind her of dark, damp passages closed off to the public.

Or maybe dope fried my neurons.

Maybe he means the show. I actually laugh at it, but then get that old telly programme feeling, that it's ancient, like Golden Girls.
Can you not mention Laural and hardy? They're in my current coincidence flow, and whenever there's another mention it just gets creepier.

There's no appreciation!

I'm reading Philip K Dick's UBIK btw.

Apparently he DIDN'T write Stig of The Dump.

I mean, Stig of The Dump. It was a bit Time travelling cave man-ish for me. It detracted from the whole point of the book, which was a boy playing in a dump on his own, doing not much of anything.

'Frasier' always seemed to depend on characters other than Frasier for most of its humour. Niles was a scream. And the Star Trek obsessive on Frasier's team was great: "Yes, Dr Crane, you SHALL see me tomorrow... and you shall PAY!"

Having said that, my favourite moment from the show was Frasier trying to timeshare two girlfriends and being found out when they meet: "Please give me another chance.... either of you..."

There's just something forced, strained, uncomfortable, about "Frasier," that I can't put my finger on. Too much like playwrights trying to craft sitcom-comedy, struggling to keep up with current styles/trends, while trapped in old "templates." The show feels slow, ponderously so....

"Will & Grace," however, was a great sitcom that gets better every time you re-watch it. It existed in a crazy world with crazy people - the characters are askew from reality, big cartoons. It had great writing and a wild energy and a zany self-deflating-ness that really worked (except the series finale, which was pretty bad).

One of the best episodes was wherein Madonna plays a desperately too-old-to-be-the-center-of-attention single working girl, bunking with the decadently-corrupt but worldly-naive Karen... a classic. W&G was consistently able to extract hilarious performances from its (maybe overall too many) star cameos: Michael Douglas, John Cleese, and Glen Close were particular stand-outs....

Kevin Bacon, of course....

And then Alec Baldwin and Woody Harrelson had extended appearances, that were wonderful (Baldwin's character should have spun off into his own show!).

Not so good appearances, imho?... Alan Arkin, Demi Moore, Beau Bridges... but that's quibbiling....

That's very disturbing, Albie.

Reminds me of the caller to Ian Collins and the Creatures of the Night who'd only say "eat me" in a very menacing voice. When the younger assistant tried to engage him he'd only reply in an even creepier voice "treat me".
