Has anyone else here apart from me sampled the fabulous writing of Steven Sherrill. He's written 3 books so far The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break Visits from the Drowned Girl The Locktender's House He has an intense and hypnotic, almost poetic prose style and I recommend him wholeheartedly. Minotaur is a stunning examination of loneliness done through the rather unusual method of throwing the most outsiderish character you can imagine - the minotaur - at the centre of the story. It's a truly amazing book Visits from the Drowned Girl follows a redneck who sees a girl kill herself as he invigles his way into the life of her family, all the time keeping the secret of the fate of their missing relative. So good I'm rereading it less than 18 months later. The Locktender's house - an atmospheric ghost story of sorts. All well worth the effort of tracking down NOW and reading |

Obviously I am the only one. Just let me rephrase the description of Visits from the Drowned girl. It follows a redneck who witnesses the suicide of a young woman who leaves a selection of home made videos at the side of the river before she drowns herself. He then insinuates (better word than the mis-spelt inveigles I used earlier) his way into her family to find out more about her. A spectacular novel about the effects of secrets on peoples lives. I cannot recommend this writer enough. |
