From the consumer advice (on the BBFC's web site) about Il Grido:

"Contains moderate domestic violence, suicide and smoking."

Are these in order of priority, do we think?

WHAT?!?!
They're warning that films contain scenes of smoking now?
We've gone beyond the nanny state into some gibbering netherworld in which the concept of adult responsibility for their own actions has never been heard of. The slippery slope to the thought (and activity) police has become an avalanche!

Il Grido also includes material that requires interpretation.

Warning: the members of the audience may have to think for themselves.

Weirdly, I think the body's occasional warnings of this nature come across as a Twitter tongue in cheek review and could well be taken as recomendations.

It's crazy to judge a film from 1957 with today's sensitivities. However, I don't see anything wrong with citing smoking as a reason to deny a modern film, for example, a U certificate.

Apparently some old Bogart films are now 18s or so because of the fags.
Don't...

Don't worry, Tony (or anyone) - this was urged by an anti-smoking group, but the BBFC was having none of it.
