I read "The Witnesses are Gone" yesterday evening, and feel it could be one of the best pieces I've read this year at least, possibly even better than that. Old films, trains, death, bleakness and despair. What's not to like? Excellent stuff, Joel; a book I'll be recommending heartily to all and sundry (but not on the Underground; I've caused enough trouble there as it is). |

Because last night was just like every other night. Thanks, Mick. And thanks for the comments on my book also. |

I loved this. One of my favourite fictional themes (that of a lost work of art - a film, a book, etc) taken to realms of utter madness and despair. |

Yes, Stephen, you must. Joel's work is rarely less than brilliant, and this one is no exception. |

I can't wait to read this novella. Joel's fiction has yet to disappoint me. Plus, the premise of The Witnesses are Gone appeals to me in a major way. Nicely done, Joel. |

I can only agree with all the positivity here for The Witnesses Are Gone. Read it last week and I was stunned by how good it was. Bleak, at times very funny, seriously strange and twisted. Although I read it during a bout of insomnia and it led to some delerious dreams when I finally did get to sleep! It's just a really powerful piece of fiction. Well done, mate. |

"I loved this. One of my favourite fictional themes (that of a lost work of art - a film, a book, etc) taken to realms of utter madness and despair." So have you read Auster's Book of Illusions? |

I'm curious: just how many of us have taken Joel to bed with us at night? Should I be getting myself tested? |

If we're putting it like that, I've had most of you in my bed! Where can I buy this one, Joel? |

PS Publishing website or Cold Tonnage Books, Niki. Simon, don't worry. I was slipcased. Or rather, you were. |

I expect to be taking Joel to bed with me next week... I've had him in my bedside drawer for a few weeks. |

You can get a copy on a weekend loan basis. Needless to say, there's a deposit on it. Thanks for your kind comments and heartening innuendos, folks. |

If we're putting it like that, I've had most of you in my bed! In that case you could say I've had Mr McMahon in an airport, Dr Fry in a motorway service station, and Joel Lane in a very nice restaurant indeed. Needless to say, I am far too much of a gentleman to reveal where I have had Miss Flynn |
