Congratulations to everyone.

Am I right in saying that this is the first year members have been asked to vote on the Short List? If so, how did the rules change?

How is it decided the number in each category?

And why are they not in alphabetical order?

Well, if it were up to me, I'd vote UKIP, but Joel will only come along and change my mind...

But well done, folks!

Hearty congratulations to Ramsey, Des, Gary, Ally, Simon, Joel and everyone else nominated for the awards! There are some very good books listed there.

I'm surprised and not a little sad not to see Simon Strantzas and Lord P. in the best collection category, though. And I'd have thought Shades of Darkness would have been a no-brainer for the anthology category. It definitely seems to be very much a 'British' list, apart from obvious names like Stephen King (but I suppose this balances the sometimes US-centric contents of many American awards).

Just out of curiosity, how are the books/stories (etc.) nominated in the first place? I'm completely ignorant about this, and have always wondered who chooses the books that are to be included in awards nominations.

Thank you! Anyone who is a member of the BFS or has attended last year's convention or registered for Fantasycon 2009 can vote.

Huw - these awards are voted for by folk who have bought and read the book, so I'm rather fond of them because of that.

I know I'll not win one, but it's still a bit of a thrill to be nominated.

To elaborate on what I said - anyone who is a member, went last year or going this year can recommend and then vote.

Last year it was recs and then voting. This year it is recs, long list and short list.

I agree totally with Zed. It is great to get this far. No matter what - we'll all be having a great party at the con :>)

I'm surprised and not a little sad not to see Simon Strantzas and Lord P. in the best collection category, though.

Bless you, Huw. It seems none of those who read our books thought highly enough of them to recommend them. Though there was a write-in mechanism, I suspect if a book misses the long-list there's no way of making it to the short-list.

Still, there's always next year. I'm pleased to have a nom at al (even though frankly I expected it to be for Best Artist)

Thanks very much Huw that's really nice of you. In fact I actually asked not to be voted for in any of the categories so I can do my Edward Lionheart act at the award ceremony
