PICTURES OF THE DARK by Simon Bestwick now available to preorder

(This is essential genre reading, folks.)

http://www.grayfriarpress.com/catalogue/pictures.html

There are dark places everywhere.
The world outside your front door, and the one inside your head. Dreads and longings. Pasts and futures.
Loneliness and relationships. Love and hate. Life and death . . . and what might lie beyond.

And then there’s the place the stories come from.
The council estate where the dead walk . . . The farmhouse attic filled with mummified corpses . . .
The old tramp’s blanket, and what slept in it at night . . .

Here, collected for the first time, are Simon Bestwick’s pictures of the dark -
23 despatches from a world very like ours, but where those dark places take on a life of their own.
The damaged and forlorn men and women in these stories pit themselves against their own demons or worlds gone mad,
uncover the rot at society’s core or in their own souls - but they’re all caught by the dark. And nobody gets away clean.

Will you?

Open the book and find out.

Just read the GFP newsletter and had another look at the TOC and realised this contains "Going Under, Flying High" - one of my all-time favourite short stories and the cause of the only fan letter I've ever sent as an adult.

And the first fan letter I ever received, as well!
Cheers, Mark!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words as well, and special thanks to the two Garys and Mr Strantzas (sorry, Captain Awesome), without whom this wouldn't have happened!

To quote Mr Curtis, above: "Simon B.'s book ordered; Gary F.'s already on my shelves." Although actually Mindful is on top of one of the stacks on the floor below the shelves, because all the shelves are full.

Also, looking forward to that Finch collection mentioned in the newsletter ...

An expressive, complex cover for what will be a memorable collection. Simon Bestwick is versatile, passionate and unsparing.

How much would the shipping to Belgium be? £3 perhaps?
I'm curious about this one. And also really looking forward to Paul Finch's upcoming novella collection. How much will that one cost?

> An expressive, complex cover for what will be a memorable collection.

Well, to be bluntly honest, I I hadn't read SB before and saw it in a bookstore, I wouldn't feel pushed to pick it up and start browsing. The hand with the skull makes it quite cheap looking. All in my not so humble opinion of course!

Tom, let me clarify... the photos suggest a low-key social realism, the skull graphic suggests old-school pulp Brit-horror. Bestwick's work shifts back and forth between those two strands. So the cover works for me as a description of the book.

Tom, yes, £3 should cover it. Come ahead.

Btw, the cover was negotiated between Simon and myself. Simon had full creative input.

Thanks for comments, all.

Jeez, Mr Fry. You're going to bankrupt me!

The Paul Finch mini collection and the Lisa Morton novel sound incredible, too. I'll have to plump for them when the time comes.
