Having just finished a project today that I've worked on for about six months, I am curious to hear what the other creators on this board do once they've finished a piece of work (other than rush straight to the next one.) I am reminded of the King character Paul Sheldon, who upon finishing his latest Misery novel, has a bottle of champagne delivered to his lodge, which he enjoys along with one cigarette. Does anyone here have a ritual upon completing a substantial piece of work, be it writing, or painting, or finishing a music album etc? Do you get blasted, or stare philosophically at the curtains, rush out to the moors and shag sheep etc...? |

Punch the sky in triumph knowing that the creative burden is dealt with again. Then five minutes later it's back, whispering snidely to me, putting me off the ostensibly straightforward act of relaxation. |

Thing is.... By the time I have finished an album it is already heading towards old hat to me, as I have been working on it for maybe a year plus. I try to avoid listening to the half finished mixes too often so it still has a modicum of freshness when it finally gets pressed and is ready to roll. To soften the blow, I start work on the follow-up long before the current one is due to be released. gcw |

I give myself clearance to not write for the rest of the day guilt-free. |

Crack on with the next thing. Partly out of gratitude that there's a next thing to crack on to; partly out of fear that one day there won't be. |

I invariably have to get rid of a nagging sense that the text in question could have been made even better. |

It depends what I'm finishing. 1st drafts are best, because you have something there to shape, feel the hard bit is done, and so can rest easy a while. After that it's tougher, because - as they say - no work of art* is ever completed, only abandoned. Finishing the first draft of a novel gives me a day of empty bliss. But it quickly fades and I'm itching to be on with something else. * And nope. Aint calling myself an artist. Just using the example. |

I guess I experience combinations of the above. You want to head for something else straightaway, but I suppose it is also important to take a step back to try and understand what one has learned etc.(but that happens during the process as well) I went for one very cold Tuborg beer. It did the trick just fine. |

On conclusion of major writing project... buy CD, wine and ingredients for nice meal. Cook and eat meal, drink wine, listen to CD. Go for long quiet walk. |

Short stories: just crack on with the next one; the voices never stop. Novels: I usually take a week to sit back and recover, because the process is so intense I'm often left physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted. |

a) it's never finished, sometimes you just have to reach a point where you sever the cord and send it out to fend for itself and b) I'm with Ally! S |
