A quick question for my learned friends (or possibly Mr C if he's around). There's part of the novella I'm currently working on that involves a director who only made one film due to box office failure and critical indifference, and I was trying to compile a list of real-life directors for inclusion in the story. Most cinephiles know about Charles Laughton and Night of the Hunter which failed mightily upon release, but is now generally regarded (rightfully) as a classic, but are there any others? Google has failed me on this occasion! I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me out... |

Robin Hardy is the first director who springs to mind for me. I believe 'The Wicker Man' disappeared without a trace on first release and now the rest is history. He did go on to direct the unfairly neglected 'The Fantasist' more than 10 years later but since that nothing, nadda, zip... I'll try and think of some more. |

'One-Eyed Jacks' (1961) famously directed by Marlon Brando after Stanley Kubrick abandoned the project. Almost the same thing happened as with 'Night Of The Hunter' [novel by Davis Grubb - see I remembered!]. |

That film has been rumoured on and off for several years now. |

Thanks guys. A friend just this past hour emailed me to suggest Herk Harvey, who directed Carnival of Souls. Wonderful B-movie fun. And Robin Harvey definitely fits what I'm looking for. They both seem bloody obvious now, as both movies are staring at me on the shelf! Thanks again... |
