I could have sworn one of our regulars was recently speculating over who wrote what in We Are For The Dark, but I'm damned if I can see where. In case the poster reads this, EJH writes in Slipstream that in order to help Robert get published she suggested that they put together a joint collection of ghost stories for Jonathan Cape. “We wrote three stories each… and at that point, the stories weren’t individually attributed. I thought that this would ease the situation, but it didn’t really.” On publication “Reviewers speculated on who had written which story, and usually got it wrong.” I take all this to mean that there were no collaborations in the book. |

Indeed. And it was the first example in history of deiberate Nemonymity in fiction attribution. |

If you're still peeking at the Thomas Ligotti boards, Ramsey, it was probably my comment you're remembering. |

Ah, it was indeed, Simon. I would have responded there, but I fear that my presence would only attract more poisonous nonsense from the usual source. I won’t bother identifying the latest outbreak of this on the Internet, but I don’t want to be responsible for anything of the kind on Ligotti’s site, especially since I admire him as much as I did when I wrote the introduction to his first book. So I won't be joining. |

You know how much I hate saying this, Ramsey, but I think you're instincts are right on this one. If you were to join, doom would no doubt come to TLO. I appreciate the correction, nonetheless. I'll post it there myself shortly. |

As I mentioned on another thread - think it was the "what are you reading" one - I've read two of the stories from 'We Are For The Dark'(1951). 'Three Miles Up' which is attributed to Elizabeth Jane Howard and Aickman's own 'The Trains' both in 'The 1st Fontana Book Of Great Ghost Stories' (1964) edited by Aickman himself - and no doubt returning the favour. They are two of the finest surreal ghost stories I have read to date and have me itching to read the other four; 'The Insufficient Answer', 'Left Luggage', 'Perfect Love' and 'The View'. Keep hoping some of them will pop up every time I start a new anthology. Howard's tale of a barge trip into the unknown with no way back has haunted me since I first read it as a teenager. I know nothing else about her as a writer though. |
