Any of you writers know anything about the difference between international rights and domestic rights to your published work? I'm under the impression that for the stories I've sold to print magazines in America I've sold only "first North American serial rights" (1NASR). This means that I've sold the first rights to that story in North America. But does that leave open first rights in Europe or Australia? That is, if I've sold a story in America, can I sell first rights again outside the country (outside North America, that is) -- or can I sell only reprint rights? And what about the Internet or electronic magazines? If I've sold a story (1NASR) to a print magazine, can I sell first electronic rights for that story as well or must that be a reprint, too? (I'm in a hurry right now, and I suspect I'm not making any sense. If anyone's confused I'll repost tonight.) Any ideas? |

I was told by Tim Lebbon last weekend (I think it was Tim; I was drunk as a Lord) never, ever to sell foriegn rights. Apparently, this covers translations, etc, and regarding novels, is where you make the real money. I must admit, though, the whole thing confuses the hell out of me... |
