Dracula's Guest is only a short story, but I like it a lot. |

Fevre Dream by George R. R. Martin. I'm not a fan of vampire fiction really, but I thought this was a superb read. |

I was moochin about Borders in Cardiff lunchtime and spotted a book about some sort of vampire community. The picture on the cover featured a slightly plump lady the wrong side of thirty who looked like she still lived with her parents and had a future that possible involved too many cats and a cackle. She had an open mouth revealing rather naff fangs. Raaaaar! |

Not sure which is my absolute favourite (obviously Dracula is a strong contender), but the last vampire novels I really enjoyed were The Golden by Lucius Shepard and The Lost by Jonathan Aycliffe. |

Another one I enjoyed (despite some silliness toward the end) was Children of the Night by Dan Simmons. It leans more toward being a 'popcorn thriller' than the others I listed, but is fun if you're in the mood for that sort of thing. |

I AM LEGEND by Richard Matheson. The only vampire novel that's better and more original than DRACULA. Though I've not read the T.M. Wright novel and will do so. George R.R. Martin's FEVRE DREAM is excellent. And Poppy Z. Brite's LOST SOULS is very good indeed. |

How did I forget I am Legend and Some of Your Blood? I haven't read the Martin and Wright novels, so thanks for the tips. Here's another good one: Salem's Lot. |

Some of Your Blood gets my vote, but I like all of Zed's choices. (I'm not sure I can count Throat Sprockets as a vampire novel, but it's very good indeed.) |

I suppose Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons also could be considered a vampire novel of sorts. |

Definitely "Throat Sprockets", with "They Thirst" getting an honourable mention but I have to say, "Salem's Lot" was one of the stories that brought me into the horror fold, so I'll always retain affection for it. |

Yeah some find the beginning of the book sort of hard to get through. I thought it moved really well. I guess some might find the opening a bit slow, but it pays off. I think I remember Simmons saying that his then editor (who was 22-23 at the time!) had made suggestions to edit over a third of the novel away- which I think was insane. He placed it elsewhere and got the whole monster out there. Speaking of Simmon's monsters, I read The Terror recently and that certainly moved really, really well for such a massive tome! In lesser hands I don't know... |

I am Legend Lost Souls The first 3 Anita Blake Vampire Novels before they went Anne Rice-tastic Salems Lot Dracula The Hunger Actually can't think of many more than that. Most vampire fiction I find a bit tedious. The Vampire Lestat is one of only two books I've thrown at the wall and then kicked across the room. It was shit on toast. |

I seriously did love Interview with a Vampire when I read it, about 26 years ago. Back then it seemed like one of the best books I'd ever read and would read. I just got so lost in it. I liked I am Legend but didn't love it. Salem's Lot just blew my socks off; just saying to Mark today how I miss that old Stephen King fellah, the one whose books used to have so much oomph. Ally; another good movie for you; My First Summer of Love. Astounding film, and sometime to be found for £3 in morrisons cheapo rack (where I got mine). If you love that Roeg fractured, hyper-real, semi-mystical feel in your films it's for you. |

The novel isn't so erotic – it's about political alienation really. A very dark satire. |

The other book was Pamela by Joseph Stephenson.Absolute drivel. I actually quite liked Interview With The Vampire. It's what it spawned that was awful. |

Still "Dracula" with me. Also "I Am Legend." "Interview with the Vampire." "Fevre Dream." I wrote about "Don Quixote"--not a vampire, but a darn good book anyway--this week at http://tbdeluxe.blogspot.com/ |
