Noot a dangerous trip on the motoways - I got bored on Monday and started watching a few of the Hitchcock movies I got in a box set of 14 films for £25. Namely The Birds Frenzy Family plot Psycho All the films (so far) have been in widescreen with some fascinating making of documentaries. Check the birds on the jungle Gym in the school yard. if you loo closely, only one in five is alive. the rest were all stuffed. You can only see it when you know what's going on because the movement of the live birds distracts the eye. I'd never seen Frenzy before. I loved it. I thought the moment where the killer takes the heroes girlfriend into his flat and then the camera dollied back down the stairs slowly and out through the front door was one of the great moments in any of Hitch's films. Plus you don't see how technically brillianty that shot is. The interior was a set, the exterior real. at the moment the camera leaves the front door, a man walks across the shot and allows them to switch shots without you ever realising. Psycho - what can I say that's not been said? Brilliance in every shot. family Plot was disappointing.. apart from the scene in the graveyard where he follows her through the paths in that great long shot there was nothing really great - none of the usual flourishes. If your local HMV still has this box set at £25 pick it up. It's well worth it - even if Rope does appear to be pan and scan. The majority appear to be widescreen and they ALL have the making of docs. |

I think ROPE was in Academy ratio so 4:3 is pretty much as close as you'll get to the original 'shape'. |
