I'm back in Toronto, and am excited to share that after taking a meeting where my co-writer and I defended our 3rd act, the financing company has agreed to fund our first draft! They don't like the end (at all) but they were convinced to give us a chance in proving them wrong.
Fingers crossed that we succeed. Either way, I can pay my bills for the next few months, so I'm ecstatic!

On a separate research note, is anyone here technically minded when it comes to things like stereos or speakers or laser discs or stuff like that??? Specifically equipment from the 1980s????

Basically I'm wondering - what makes something look or sound good? Essentially what is the difference with low and hi end equipment? Is it something in the speaker? Or in a lens or laser or needle that reads information?

And in follow up, I'm wondering if it would be possible to replace that part (in a high-end product with the equivelent part from a low-end product?) -- meaning, could someone (who was doing instillation work in say something like - home theatres, or home surround sound systems etc) run a scam of stealing high end parts and replacing them, without people knowing?

Good news, A. - you film-maker, you! As for your question, I'm not sure I understand you... As for what makes kit sound good, it's a bit of everything. It's no good having good 'speakers with rubbish amps, or good amps and a crap cd player or turntable. The quality comes from design as well as components. It's possible, I guess, that someone could open stuff up and replace individual components (say, within an amplifier - they didn't have much in the way of surface mount stuff in the 'eighties) but I very much doubt you could get away with changing the box...

Small speakers are high end. Large low end. I think. You want a speaker with both.

I think.

Excellent news, A!

Is this a Canadian production? When do you have to get them the next draft? When do you think it may go in front of a camera?

... gee, we may be in a bit of a race here to get a film out now....

Adriana,

1. Good news!
2. About your question: there was once a scandal in the 90s about a few guys cloning an expensive amplifier, but it was just the outside that was similar to the original brand, the inside was a generic amp. Since it was one of these minimalist power amps with just an on/off button and a little LED on the front, the forgery was quite doable. Is this the kind of thing you were looking for? Another idea for your movie for a scam back then could be to sell a very expensive record player element (the truly hi end could cost a couple thousand dollars) but delivering a much cheaper one.

Now I realise that perhaps your question wasn't linked to your script? In that case Mick answered sufficiently. I could add: even really good hifi from the 80s (I have some Quad electronics from that time, these were regarded among the better ones back then) is probably less than stellar now as the components slowly age and that will typically result in a smooth but not very detailed sound nowadays. Otherwise, a very simple check is to see if the + and - connectors of the speaker and amp are correctly connected. If one is switched then you'll notice that the sound is in a strange way "wrong", with the bass being ill-defined.

Thanks for the info Tom and Mick.

This is all helpful, but to clarify, what I'm hoping for is the possibility that someone could use a hi end (expensive brand name) exterior/shell for a piece of equipment but open it up and replace the inside with a low end product. (As what people are really paying for is that brand name.) I'm flexible with it being one element or more, but simplicity is better. Does that make sense? Essentially, I want this guy to be able to install these products but then re use or re sell the hi end insides so he's making twice the profit... Yeah?
I'm just not sure yet what the product should be (that would be appropriate for say 1985ish).

If you have thoughts on this Mick, maybe I could call you?

Why not go the other route, A? Have this fellow be a scam artist, who in the 80's, is selling some component for hi-fi equipment that's the equivalent of the old "undercoating" auto scam: he's selling them chips or vacuum tubes or somesuch, that is guaranteed to boost sound quality, been proven in lab studies, etc., but does nothing of the kind.

I'm trying to change your vision, essentially - welcome to Hollywood!

A - this is fantastic news. I hope it comes off.
Did you know about the fake car parts market in Japan? They make copy parts for cars that look the same but are inferior and dangerous. Maybe your guy could just install the hi fis with cheap parts that look the same, and have a buyer for the new. Maybe.
