Finished this baby a couple of nights ago....

Firstly, I found this a more enjoyable read than, 'Thieving Fear' which, though I enjoyed, I felt did not hang together as well as some of our Landlords' books (although, it had some great moments, and a great 'twist' moment regarding one of the female characters - mebbe I'm thick, but I didn't guess it).

'Creatures flows much better, It seems all RC's new books will be judged against the the quite marvellous 'Grin Of The Dark', 'Creatures is not quite up to the heights of that book, but is full of all the writing 'highs' we all enjoy so much, plus he gives us two of his most memorable comic horror characters in the two policemen, the horror is subtle and inexorable as the story winds its way towards a memorable conclusion.

Like the best Horror, much here is implied rather than overstated and indeed, the last line and its emphasis played on my mind after reading.

Loved it.

I understand your surprise that no-one else has commented on this GCW ... but I think there's another thread on it here - that's the reason!

I still have it on my shelf to be read, along with lots of other books. I have so much to read that I've not even read Thieving Fear... I bloody loved Grin of the Dark though - if Creatures only starts to scale the heights of that book I'll be more than happy.

I'm trying to clear the decks before I start this - Ramsey's novels aren't designed for simply dipping into when yu get the chance; I need to create enough time to give them the attention they deserve.

I fear I doubt it, Sean. As I said elsewhere on here, the Liverpool Waterstones is no longer allowed to order its own stock. You're best ordering direct from PS.

It seems all RC's new books will be judged against the quite marvellous 'Grin Of The Dark'

I'll be taking the plunge and starting this next Gcw. looking forward to some sleepless nights over Christmas!

By the way. What was the title of the RC short story published in the UK's FEAR magazine in the eighties?
It might have been issue 1 if I recall. The story was set in a Nursery school after hours and the childrens drawings come to life.

Is that the "hobbling, hobbling" story? If so it's stayed in my mind since I read it in Fear - good stuff!

That's the one Ramsey.
Mick, the 'hobbling' things have stayed with me also. One leg longer than the other and oversized heads, etc. Children's pictures always looked creepy to me too. Brrr..
