The SFX Horror Special is out on Wednesday 27th of January. Containing articles on Blaxploitation horror films, Video Nasties, Horror Comics, interviews with Robert Englund, Ingrid Pitt amongst others - a short story by Simon Clark and last but not least a four page article by myself on the history of The Pan Book of Horror Stories. Very honoured to be asked to be in it!

Like I said, you're doing a great job reviving interest in the Pans! Very well done, Johnny!

Nice article in SFX, Johnny!

I take issue with you on one point though - the Pans were playground-fodder for girls as well as boys when I was a youngster (late 60s/early 70s). I wonder if that was the earlier Pans - the more "classic" stories - rather than the later ones which turned more "experimental"?

Interesting snippets in the article too about van Thal. Whets my appetite for your book in March even more now.

Thought it was head and shoulders above any other article in the magazine. Pretty underwelmed by the issue as a whole.

'Thought it was head and shoulders above any other article in the magazine. Pretty underwelmed by the issue as a whole.'

That was my thoughts exactly. Really enjoyed the Pan piece but the rest was pretty lame. SFX is primarily a movie magazine though so that may be it. These days if i'm going to buy that sort of magazine i'll get Deathray which tends to cover a wider spectrum and be better written.

The other annoying thing about the SFX Horror special was that it seemed to charge an extra £4 for 3 cardboard beermats, 2 pin badges, a poster and a cardboard envelope. Rubbish!

Piranha 3D??? Even with Aja at the helm that sounds like a bad idea...

'Fraid you can't buy Deathray any more, Clive, it's gone the way of the dodo, Rumbelows, and civility in public discourse...

Oh, has it? Thought i hadn't seen one for ages. I knew it went bi-monthly or something so i assumed i kept missing it. I thought that company, Blackfish i think, got bought up by Rebellion.

They did. And then they were 'let go of' (or something similar) by Rebellion, and we lost Deathray, and Filmstar, unfortunately...

Oh dear, I was saving the other articles for later. Might not bother then.

I thought the "lost films" bit looked interesting - I started reading it but got interrupted and never went back. I'll finish it off some time.

I'll probably put the badges, poster and beermats on eBay at some point!

Cheers for the positive comments folks, makes all that hard work worthwhile! And fair point about the Pan's Caroline, but the girls at our school were too high brow for that kind of nastiness... :D

Quite liked the Blaxploitation article and the Lost films one. I think there should have been more horror book articles written though.
