I just picked up a couple of magazines at my local bookshop, SFX and Sci-Fi Now, and they both have enthusiastic four-star reviews of The Grin of the Dark, which has just been published in paperback format by Virgin.

There's also a half-page ad in one of them proclaiming the 'return of the master of horror'. Hooray!

Huzzah!

I've been saying since I read it that this is one of Ramsey's greatest novels, and I also think it's a good introduction to his longer work for new readers. Let's hope it sells like crazy, if only so Virgin will reprint every book Ramsey has ever written. :-)

'return of the master of horror'

It's a pity the fools don't realise he never went away.

I went to Borders and Waterstones in Cardiff yesterday, but no Ramsey!

There was however a 'psychic' author signing books downstairs in Borders. I only heard his voice as I was leaving, but it sounded like it was from a character The League of Gentlemen would come up with.

It really gave me the shivers, all treacly and faux concern as they fleece your nan of her gas money. I wouldn't look over to see him at his table. It made my flesh crawl.

Modern psychics have to be one of the creepiest professions about. There's a horror story to be written about the whole genre.

"It's a pity the fools don't realise he never went away"

Yep - but it's heartening to think that this new Virgin edition might bring new readers to the good stuff, readers who may otehrwise have been unaware of it. I hope that (as you suggested) they will reissue some of the older novels and collections in paperback.

Apologies in advance for any typos or clumsy wordage today - my chronic pain problem hads flared up badly and I am zonked on muscle relaxants.

Thanks Gary! Fortunately I don't have anything urgent that needs doing this weekend (work-wise, that is) so I'm going to try to take it easy while watching or reading some good fiction.

I think Virgin will publish much more of Ramsey's work.

Griff - I have written a story called, The Poison Tree, to be in my collection. It's about a modern psychic. It might give you a laugh.

Zed - yes blatant and relevant :>)

Huw - I hope you feel better soon, too.

Thank you, Ally!

Griff, no, we didn't feel it here - it was a long way off, in Szechuan province (home of the pandas). I really feel for them, though. We were hit by an earthquake of similar magnitude here nearly ten years ago and some areas still haven't recovered. In some ways it was the most frightening experience of my life.

What's happening in Myanmar is equally worrying, and so frustrating because the suffering there, at least to some extent, could have been avoided.

Adam Neville is in charge at Virgin Books on their horror line and he is certainly a man who knows his onions and a splendid chap to boot. We chatted at the London Book Fair and Virgin's new range sounds very exciting indeed. It's wonderful that someone with the passion is bringing these titles to a wider audience. And yes, Grin of the Dark is a truly extraordinary book. Very unsettling and a fiction that makes you doubt your own sanity at times.

Excellent news! A hearty congrats! Yes hope the launch of the new series takes off. This was already reviewed really well on the PS edition. I enjoyed this book very much. And the Williams as well.

Wish you all the best Huw!

Griff, I'm not sure when I'll be coming back to Wales next, but I'll let you guys know when I do. It would be good to finally meet some of the folk here face to face as opposed to across the yawning chasms of cyberspace. We could get together with Tony and explore some spooky places. Hand-holding is out though, I'm afraid...

Kharim, thanks for the well-wishes. I can actually walk to the PC without using my stick today, so the good will coming from this board must be having some effect (that and the meds).
