Anyone following this TV programme on BBC2 on Saturdays? History of the Web and the Internet: its plus points and dangers. Its inescapable effect on all our lives. Fascinating. Both disturbing and exciting.

And isn't the presenter - Dr Aleks Krotoski - simply wonderful?

I'd intended to watch it, but got sidetracked by other things (including web surfing!). From the trailer, it looked interesting. Might catch it again some time ...

Talking of the dangers of the internet here's a summary of a recent paper about internet addiction and depression:

Perhaps we shouldn't be surfing the internet quite so much, eh?

A very serious possible downside that, Caroline. One that is easily empathisable. You are right to post it here.

I think there are many ways to use the internet. Personally, most of what I do is hopefully creative, i.e. concerning my own writing and publishing (and brainstorming with and without the input of others). But I do try to ration myself regarding the time I spend doing it, as everyone should, I feel.

It's a phenomenon that desperately needs analysis. Missed the 2nd ep, though! Is it repeated? (TV on iPlayer doesn't work outside the UK.)

Perfect, thanks!

I liked the web in the 90s when it was all new. Remember the BBC programme THE NET? It was still exciting then. Much as I dislike the moniker (and much of their actual work) the cyberpunks got pretty much everything right and deserve kudos for it.

I'm addicted to checking emails, my texts, and playing solitaire on my phone. My eyes have been hurting, and I don't really listen to my kids or wife properly. I'm never really 'here'. My attention span is worse than it's ever been and my eyesight is shot to bits. I am seriously thinking of chucking them all, trying to write to people. But who will really write in return? It's such a labour.
I miss the pre net/phone world, I really do. I felt present and still in it. Time itself seems distorted now, as well as our minds.

In a way I'm the same, Tony, so I know what you mean. Well, I don't bother with texts and a mobile (my mobile is rarely switched on and it's only there for emergencies if my car breaks down late at night or something like that), but when it comes to computers, I'm well and truly hooked.

As I work freelance, I currently have three different work emails to check, plus I also have two personal ones. So I seem to waste a load of time checking and responding to emails, and chatting on forums like this. Then, for work, there are two different VLEs (virtual learning environments) to sort out/check. And that's not to mention the time spent browsing eBay, abe books, and so on!

The internet's great if you can control it - eg. online shopping (for things you want, not things you don't!), paying bills, ordering prescriptions and so on, but if it takes control of YOU, then there's a problem.

I think so long as we're aware of the problem, then we can keep it in check.

Oh, I haven't got into computer games, thankfully - except playing solitaire on it!
