P.S. I'm reading at 10am on Saturday – ha! At least I don't have to worry about what to read. It'll just be me and Reggie Oliver's cat.

What do you mean, he doesn't have a cat? What about that grey thing that followed me...

One other comment: I could easily spend a thousand pounds on books being launched at World Horror Con. I don't have even a fifth of that to spend. If I don't buy your book at the time, forgive me.

I'm not buying any books at Brighton as I won't carry them. I'll buy them later by other means and then hopefully real-time review them. Please don't offer me any freebies! Not that any of you are likely to do so! ;)

One of the reasons I passed on Brighton is I simply can't buy anymore books until Fantasycon in September..

I will need the next few months to absorb all I have.I get terribly agitated if I have too many books to read.

But fear not, people with books to sell, I will be gobbling them up in September.

I'll be getting some of the Ash Tree collections. I've heard that the Duffy, the Finch and the Unsworth ones will be available in paperback at around £10.99 and Zed's is in hardback only, at around £20. I'll certainly be getting Charlie Black's SIXTH BLACK BOOK OF HORROR. And John Travis' debut novel...THE TERROR AND THE TORTOISESHELL..not sure what else I can afford, yet.

Unfortunately I don't earn much money so hubs has agreed we spend some of our money in sending me to WHC. Ain't easy though.

I'll only be getting the one book and that'll be Basil Copper's macabre short stories collection. At a hefty £100, I won't be able to afford anything else...

But it's Basil, and I'd be foolish to pass up on something so beautiful from the the genre's greatest living writer.

Aw, Gary, sorry you're not going to be there - I was looking forward to meeting you too.

Well, my transport arrangements are in the process of being sorted out, and my hotel room is booked. The very helpful Amanda spent ages trying to find me a nice, quiet room because of my sleep problems, and she's put me in a basement room with no windows well away from everyone else - so I'll be like the Beast in the Cellar! If you hear strange howling and screaming noises coming from the hotel basement in the middle of the night, you'll know who it is.

As for books, I've realised I'm going to have to be careful (a) how much I spend and (b) how heavy my suitcase ends up being, so I might have to curb my desire to buy books too. The Sixth Black Book and Johnny's Pan Legacy book are definite "must haves", but anything else might have to wait and be bought on the internet later.

I won't be arriving till the Friday afternoon - just in time for the Black Book launch if all goes according to plan. I have a Jethro Tull concert to go to on the Thursday evening. So, sadly, I'll miss Ramsey's reading on the Thursday.

The programme looks excellent and has got me quite excited. It's a pity there isn't something going on at the same time as the expensive Saturday evening "do" though, for those of us who prefer our fish and chips a lot cheaper. Hmmm, I might just have to pop out on my own and have my own fish and chip supper out of newspaper on the promenade ...

Er, I'm probably confused (as always) but isn't it the awards thingy I'm talking about? I thought there was this expensive meal with the awards ceremony included? If so, I've not booked for that. But I'm probably confused ...

Caroline - if it's anything like FCon and the WHC in Toronto, folk who've not booked for the meal can come in when the meal is over to see the awards ceremony, as it's usually after the meal in the same room.

Yes; it's called the Stoker Awards banquet, but the awards aren't handed out until after the dinner. If you don't want to go to the dinner but do want to attend the awards ceremony, there's no charge for that; you just show up after the dinner and before the awards.

Sorry for the swearing but I have to say it - damn this bloody illness!! I haven't made it to WHC and didn't even make it to my Tull concert last night, due to an almighty flare-up. Drat and double drat (I really want to type something else, but my fingers won't let me).

What illness, Caroline?!
Some kind of joint problem - arthritis or gout?

I'm really, really sorry to hear that and can feel your pain...
Having gout twinges myself at the minute and getting up from sitting is quite stiff and painful - I feel like the Tin Man when he needs oiling.

How long do these flare ups usually last?

Thanks Stephen and Steve. Stephen - I have ME aka. chronic fatigue and also fibromyalgia. Here's a potted history of FM for you:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/physical_health/conditions/fibromyalgia1.shtml

Basically, if you imagine gout-like pain in every limb, back, neck and shoulders, that just about sums it up I reckon. But the thing which really made me realise that I couldn't make it to WHC was the fact that I'm so exhausted at the moment. I have terrible trouble sleeping, and I realised I was likely to make myself very poorly indeed if I had a hectic few days at WHC. I can only do very small amounts of activity each day before my energy and concentration goes. I thought I could manage it, just this once, but then realised it wasn't a sensible thing to try.

Gout is nasty. Hubby gets it and can hardly walk when he does. Have you tried Diclofenac (I think that's right)? I think that's what the doc gives hubby when his flares up.

My "flare-ups" come and go - it's always there, but it's worse at some times more than others.

I'm so damned annoyed with myself at the moment for missing WHC. I've already eaten a big bar of chocolate to try to make me feel better, now I think I might have to trawl the internet and buy some books to see if that helps cheer me up ...

Caroline - amazon have most of the Bowie albums for three quid at the moment (MP3 format). Er, that's supposing you like Bowie... :-(

Caroline, my gout is controlled by a daily Allopurinol tablet with Colchicine to take during my still occasional flare ups.

It's more of a nuisance than debilitating in the way your condition is... the thought of gout pain all over the body makes me realise what an uncomplaining saint you really are!

Cheer yourself up with the thought of all the things you have done and people you have met in the business that some of us could only ever dream of... that, and the new 'Doctor Who' will be starting soon!!

Tony, I have them all on remastered CD. It's between 'Hunky Dory' & 'Scary Monsters' which is my fav.

Thanks guys - you're real sweeties.

"the thought of gout pain all over the body makes me realise what an uncomplaining saint you really are!"

That's a first. I normally get accused of being a right old moaning minnie!

"Cheer yourself up with the thought of all the things you have done and people you have met in the business that some of us could only ever dream of... that, and the new 'Doctor Who' will be starting soon!!"

That's a good point. I'm feeling less annoyed with myself now anyway. In fact, I've just gone and booked another Doctor Who con. This one's in Manchester and it's just one day, so I should be able to manage that.

Stephen - I recently loved the space Oddity one. Memory of a Free Festival is just possibly his best ever thing. I even liked the Space Oddity demo/live version.

Caroline, sorry to hear you're having such a bad time with your fibromyalgia. That sounds awful. Are you still taking the Lyrica for it?

My gout has been mercifully quiet lately, but my spine pain has spiked so much the last couple of days that I can barely stand up (must be something affecting all us chronic pain people at the RCMB - I remember Mark said he was bad, too). It's like there are red hot knives being stuck in between my vertebrae and twisted round and round - bloody painful! It's as much as I can do to feed the cat - she's barely out of kittenhood and keeps asking me to play! My pain management doctor increased my medicine at my last appointment, but on bad days it still only takes the edge off. Hope you feel better soon. You too, Stephen, and Mark.

Oh, Huw, sounds like you're having a dreadful time pain-wise too. Sorry to hear that. Hope it eases for you soon.

Yes, I'm still on Lyrica - but I can only tolerate a low dose or I'd be asleep all day! It seems to work for a while but then I guess I get used to it and need to increase the dose. But when I try to increase it, I'm so spaced out and tired I just can't function. It'd be fine if I could stay in bed all day, but I can't unfortunately!

Anyway, glad to see Mick has started another thread to report on WHC - RCMBers with chronic pain seem to have taken over this thread again. Sorry again, folks!

Thanks, Caroline. I had similar problems with Neurontin (gabapentin), even at low doses - I couldn't get used to the side-effects. I haven't tried Lyrica yet.

Thanks, Des. I'm still gutted I didn't make it.

It sounds like a good time was had by all who went. Mind you, I don't think I'd have been able to keep up with all the partying, even if I'd been on the best possible form!
