I'm coming somewhat late to the party here, as far as collections go, but I'm pleased and proud to announce that I've sold a collection of my supernatural/strange fiction to Prime Books. Northwest Passages will be published in an initial edition of 1500 hardback copies, and will be out in October 2009, to coincide with World Fantasy in San Jose, California. It will collect together most of my published fiction, and will also contain new material. Looks like I have to get serious with this writing business. |

I would be green with envy, if it were not for the fact that I've gained Enlightenment. It feels like you want to sneeze, down below. |

Congratulations, Barbara! Good luck with the new stories. The crucial question is: will this collection be a compliation of diverse stuff (featuring the best stories available across a wide spectrum) or be a 'concept album' of fairly similar stories exploring certain themes in depth? In other words, will it be like SHADOWS IN RAIN or THE WHITE HANDS? There's a case for both types of book. Actually there's a case for most types of book. It's called a bookcase. I'm getting help. Honest. |

Will you be wearing a cape and a wizard hat, Babs? Sat behind three keyboards and glitterty make up distorting your face? |

Thanks, all, for the very kind words! And I should warn you that I'm taking the names of everyone who's blithely promising, at this stage, to buy a copy; I'll have ways of knowing if you do or not, and you really don't want me to set the runes on you. No cape or wizard hat, Albie; although I do have two keyboards. . . . As for your question, Joel: it'll be a collection of diverse stories across a broad spectrum of settings, times, and characters, with a variety of narrative voices. If I had to name one thing that unites many of them it's loneliness and/or isolation of the main characters, whether the story is set in the interior of B.C. in the present day, in the Prairies at the turn of the last century, on the graveyard shift in a hotel in Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside, in the Arctic in the mid-1800s, in the northwest of England, or in Antarctica during the 'Golden Age' of South Pole exploration. Sometimes the loneliness is created by the characters, sometimes by the setting, but I find myself drawn to exploring how people deal with being alone, and how even if that is ostensibly what people want, things have a way of turning against you. So it won't be billed as 'the feel-good book of the year'. |

Congratulations! That is very cool. I've only sold one story so far, but the dream of someday being to put out a collection drives me on to do keep at it. I love anthologies of that sort, so I'll have to keep an eye out for it. |
