Well, I've just finished my new novel. God knows how I managed it amid everything else I appear to have taken on lately. But I have. |

Just when you think the tough part is all over it feels tough again, doesn't it? My book began breezily, and to go back to it after the ending I reached is very difficult. But some things, feeling the shape of the story starting to appear, is great and unexpected. Realising you can manage something. But we did good; Martin Amis recently threw an unfinished novel he'd been writing for ages away, you know. That terrifies me; I came close precisely three times with that one. |

I think Amis rewrote the whole MS from a different POV, Tony. It would be The Pregnant Widow. But yeah, the tough part for me is having to read how clumsy it all is until I refine it. It all looks bad, but it isn't really. Just needs a tweak. Like a sketch you turn into a drawing. Shape followed by detail. |

>>>Realising you can manage something. Yes, and that confidence born of knowing sustains you, you know. I hope you'll continue writing, Tony. Grind em out. |

Ha! Grind is a Mark Lynch word! Right now I am re-re-rewritng my opening scenes, what are must surely be the most valuable in any book. It's horrible tricky - action, drama, is easy compared with having to describe a person from scratch, set up where they are. I must have had more trouble with this than with any other part of the book put together. I heard Amis on the radio saying he'd started Pregnant Wife after chucking a book away. Hope he did use it, because I think anything is salvagable. And the idea of feeling all that work has to be binned is awful. |

I wish I could produce novels as quickly as you. I find them a bit of a slog, to be honest. But oddly I prefer writing novels to short fiction. |

A sharp knock on the occipital lobes should be enough to induce OCD. Failing that, I could do some brutal work to your basal ganglia. Either way, insanity and writing novels quickly will almost certainly result. |

Chris Evans said on the radio today that the key to happiness was hard work. He's currently - in my eyes - the sage of the airwaves, that guy. He's become a lovely, wise and generous bloke. |
