The Eurkea edition is great. But if you're skint buy none of them. |

I have the Eureka edition and it's good. Don't expect it to look crisp, though. Restoration has its limits. |

It's public domain, Tony - download it from google video and put it on your iPod, for better quality - if you're "skint" and really want to see it, that is.... |

The Criterion and Eureka editions are both lovely, but the Eureka is cheaper (I think) and has an audio commentary with Guillermo Del Toro. Both editions have a documentary about director Carl Dreyer, and the Criterion also comes with a book containing the screenplay. |

I have the Redemption edition on vhs and a dvd version released by Blackhawk Films which is packaged in a cardboard sleeve but features a 26 minute short film , The Mascot, by Ladislas Starewicz. I remember when Redemption first released this back in the early 90s and the print got a slating in Darkside Magazine, though that didn't at all detract from the pleasure or the sense of utter dread the film gave me. The subtitles are better on the Redemption edition of the two that I own; on the latter they are large and clumsy. However, I haven't seen the Criterion edition. And their release of Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc (which I do have) is really something to behold. The sound is muffled in both cases but I have a feeling that that was as much Dreyer's intention than the fault of the print. The sound is eerie as hell in this film and subtle audio effects add to the overall feeling of unease. The quote on the back of my Redemption vhs though says it all, and I may paraphrase: "Evil wafts off the screen like a chill of bad breath". Said without any sense of nostalgia or sentimentality, this truly is one of the very best and most unsettling horror films ever made. |

I saw the film on channel four back when it used to bother with such things. I thought it was perfect, too. |

Ah yes, I miss the days when BBC2 and Channel 4 had regular screenings of classic and obscure world cinema, usually late on Friday nights. They were often introduced by that strange Scottish bloke; was it Mark Cousins? Like you say, they don't seen to bother now. |

I think BBC4 has partly taken over the jobs of Channel 4 and BBC2 nowadays - not so good as they were when at thyier best, but a lot better than nowt. Patrick - haven't forgotten you - I'll get your CD sorted after WHC this weekend. |

Mark Cousins is Irish, possibly Northern Irish. The title of this thread promised more fun than the content has delivered. Nobody's fault, needless to say. |

'Vampyr' is an awesome movie - weird and hypnotic in a way that's hard to put your finger on but that reminded me of 'Eraserhead' a lot... you get the impression the central character is lost in a monochrome nightmare. Brilliant and beautiful like all Dreyer's work. I won't watch it again, though, until I get the chance to see it properly, up on the big screen. |
