I am not a fan of the Predator vs Alien series in the slightest bit. BUT, Robert Rodriguez has remade the McTiernan original without Arnie, thank Christ, with Adrien Brody and Laurence Fishburne among others. And this looks fantastic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2jJOy8rzog |

No, no, no, no, no, no... 'Predator' without Arnie is just plain wrong! Bloody remakes! |

And here we must disagree, dear sir. I'm convinced this will be a far superior film than the original. |

Arnie is a buffoon and a nincompoop, and possible future President of the USA, but he did star in three of the greatest genre films ever made: 'The Terminator', 'Terminator II' & 'Predator'. |

He can't be President of the U.S., Stevie, because he wasn't born in the U.S., but in - Austria, was it? Yeah, I know Arnie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xo5Pvp17fp8 |

Last Austrian to rise to the rank of leader of another country was some bloke called... what was it now? Adolf... something or other. probably not a good idea to let it happen again. Particularly when, in his last movie role, the world as we knew it was blown to smithereens at the end. |

This ain't a remake. It is either a prequel or a sequel where a group of the most dangerous killers on Earth are placed on the Predators home world in some kind of intergalactic fox-hunt. |

Adam - it's what Hollywood are calling a reboot. New fancy wordage for 'let's try it again'. Though it wouldn't surprise me if it was some kind of tentative sequel. |

It doesn't matter where he was born, Craig, the rule regards whether or not he was born a citizen. It's the fact that he is a naturalised citizen that bars Arnie from running for President, not where he was born. That's why John McCain (born in Panama) could run for President. Interestingly (to me), that rule was introduced in the mid-nineteenth century because of fears of 'hordes' of German immigrants swamping the country, and getting elected... |

Hey, that sounds might like it might actually be good fun and Rodriguez is a talented genre director. I'd rather watch an imaginative sequel than a remake. I, for one, loved 'Planet Terror'. |

Yes, and don't you think that "rule" can be done away with just as easily as it was introduced. People thought Frank Zappa was insane when he claimed, in the 1960s, that the CIA were setting Ronnie Reagan up as a future stooge President and look what happened... "I'll be back" suddenly takes on a whole new meaning! |

Steve - Planet Terror is fantastic. I heard muted reviews, so I watched it not knowing how good or bad it might be. It was a knock-out. A delight for genre fans. |

Planet Terror knocked me to sleep, just like the other half of that double bill. It was like watching a couple of blokes wanking off. I like Rodriguez and Tarantino and had high hopes for both films but neither one bothered me at all, in any way. |

Loved Planet Terror, loved Death Proof. Both were great fun, and note-perfect pastiches of the kind of films they were inspired by. |

I did want to like them, but I've grown a bit weary of wanting to have liked so many things... it's like I have to work to like things, these days... Didn't have to work to enjoy - nay, love - famous paedo children's author William Mayne's Game of Dark, though. What a writer, and what a tricky writer - he'd be 'difficult' for most modern adult readers now, I think, let alone kids. Ramsey - you'd love his books. Just a pity about that tarnished bloody past... |

I actually wanted to dislike the films at the time. Not sure why; I think it was my own silly personal backlash against smug big-budget Hollywood faux grindhouse trying to imitate the real thing. alas, I loved them. |

Agreed, 'Death Proof' was a return to form for Tarantino that 'Inglourious Basterds' put the rubber stamp on. Any news of his next project? |

I loved both Kill Bill films - especially the second one. Awesome stuff. Utterly inspired homage, like all of QT's work. |

I may be alone in loving Jackie Brown, but I'm a confessed WiP genre fan and thought it was a splendid tribute to Pam Grier. I don't like QT but in spite of that I do tend to like most of his films. I loved Planet Terror but found Kill Bill pretty tiresome as a whole - so self-indulgent I wasn't able to tune out the QT-ness and just enjoy the film on its own merits. If that makes sense. |

Death Proof was tremendous fun. Especially that leg. I really liked both Kill Bill films. And Jackie Brown. I guess that makes me a Tarrantino fan. |

Kate, we're on the same wavelength regarding QT. 'Jackie Brown' is his best film to date and the 'Kill Bill' movies were a grossly over-inflated ego trip of monstrous proportions that would have made an excellent standard length, single film with a clearer head and extensive pruning. Likewise 'Inglourious Basterds' threatened for years to turn into another top-heavy, two-part monster until common sense prevailed - the dust having settled on KB and a critical consensus been formed that Quentin was fast disappearing up his own arse. The result of this moderation of ambition was pure gold and the complete resuscitation of his career imho. So any news on what he's up to now? |

I'd rather watch an ambitious failure that a moderate success. But Kill Bill is, IMHO, an ambitious success. Utterly audacious, thrilling and entertaining on every level. |

I really love Uma Thurman, but the Kill Bill films are frightful hokum. The first one is great comedy, the second one is a sad letdown and, quite simply put, bad art. |

Totally disagree, Hubert. It's great art - the second one is even better than the first. But, hey, life would be dull if we all had the same opinions. |

Jackie Brown, on the other hand, I thoroughly enjoyed. Samuel Jackson is devilishly good. The man's stare is lethal. |
