Well, my bad mood today has been lifted slightly by the unveiling of the lovely cover for Pretty Little Dead Things:

http://angryrobotbooks.com/our-authors/gary-mcmahon/pretty-little-dead-things/

The novel will be published in November by Angry Robot. Just to really annoy those who don't approve of writer's publicising their own work, here are some tasty blurbs:

“Gary McMahon’s vision is as bleak as a Yorkshire moor, but it glows with a wintry light that illuminates the dark we live in. His prose and his sense of place are precise and evocative, and his characters are as real as you and me. He’s one of the darkest – which is to say brightest – new stars in the firmament of horror fiction.”
- Ramsey Campbell

” ‘Pretty Little Dead Things’ is a very disturbing read. Gary McMahon seems intent on taking readers through the looking glass and tearing down the walls between the living and the dead. He creates dark, hallucinatory images that burn in your brain forever. One very creepy dude, and this is his creepiest to date.”
- Christopher Fowler

“Thomas Usher is a great character treading a twilight world between Manhunter and Most Haunted; conflicted by grief, haunted by blame, a ‘magnet for ghosts’ who sees the skull beneath the skin. In Pretty Little Dead Things, Gary McMahon nails genuine horror as few British writers can – or dare. He gets under your skin, then burrows even deeper. Terrifyingly, dangerously, hauntingly so.”
- Stephen Volk, creator of TV’s Afterlife

“Gary McMahon’s horror is heartfelt, his characters flawed and desperate, and this book is a rich feast of loss, guilt, and redemption. His vivid ideas are given life in beautiful prose, and the book leaves you staring into shadows that weren’t there before. His talent shines, and is set to burn brighter still.”
- Tim Lebbon

The novel isn't out until November, but I've just come across this nice little advance review of Pretty Little Dead Things:

http://gillpolack.livejournal.com/674337.html

It's short, but the reviewer seems to get what I was trying to do - create a memento mori wrapped up in a tight plot and with decent characterisation.

Nice, Gary!

I was at the local bookshop with my friend recently and, noticing a book called Pretty Dead Things, I thought of impressing her with how I knew the author, but then I saw the book was missing a 'Little' and was by a Barbara someone... unless this is a new pseudonym of yours, Zed?!

Ha! No, Huw, it's another author. When Angry Robot were still part of HarperCollins their release of that book delayed mine. Now that Angry Robot have been taken over by Osprey, the delay is simply because of the corporate buy-out. It feels like I've been waiting forever to see this novel on in the shops.

Huzzah!

Over the last 3 nights I've been reviewing and commenting on the proofs for Pretty Little Dead Things and I've finally finished - just emailed my corrections to the publisher, and it feels bloody great.

I also just had a rather lovely email from one of the publisher's proof-readers saying that he absolutely loved the novel. Happy days.

Now, on to the next novel...

The first reviews are in, and they're uniformly postive:

http://angryrobotbooks.com/2010/10/by-far-the-best-horror-novel-release-of-2010/

Bit overwhelming, all this, but it's also very exciting. The book is out in the UK on November 4th, and December in the US/Canada.

It's an odd feeling...quite emotional knowing the book is out in three weeks.

Btw, I still haven't posted Rain Dogs. I need to actually go into a post office to find the cheapest method (it's as expensive as posting abroad sending something to N. Ireland!). Keep watching that letterbox...
