There was an article on BBC Radio 4's Today programme this moring that I only half caught - where a spokesman for some research claimed the Internet is stopping people being couch potatos in front of TV. i.e now generally becoming more active creatively on social sites and blogs etc rather than being passive. The internet is also more democratic. Or so he says. I'm in two minds. His approach was one of prevailing trends, not that he was saying the internet was all good. Has anyone a link to this research?

I like that,

the Internet is stopping people being couch potatos in front of TV. i.e now generally becoming more active creatively on social sites and blogs etc

They're still couch potatos. I know their minds are possibly getting more exercise but their bodies don't - their waistlines still develop that couch potato look don't they.

I think they were referring to psychological couch potatos. i.e. that the internet prevails against this when compared to erstwhile TV watching habits which are statistically (& thankfully) declining.

Also it gets people out to meet in interest groups etc., flashmobs etc??

I think the whole thing about bodily exercise is a separate question. I make sure I walk at least 4 miles a day.

But I'm sticking indoors today as it's raining hard and 'Null Immortalis' is due to be delivered. :-)

I've now found the recording of interview with Clay Shirky from this morning's radio:

Just a quick response as I'm rushing around today ..

I think the internet can be a good thing - or it can be a bad thing. Used wisely, it can enable creativity, allow access to people and information which would be difficult to do without the internet, provide educational opportunities (remember, I work in education), etc.

But used badly it's a time-waster, can inhibit social skills rather than develop them, and can be very dangerous indeed (eg. scams, porn, grooming, etc).

So, it depends on whether you use it wisely or not. Those are my quick thoughts on it anyway.

Caroline, I agree wholeheartedly.

BTW, 'Nemonymous' would never have existed as a print publication over 10 years without the internet. :-)
