Anyone seen this Aussie gem? An excellent drama/ghost story/mockumentary about the mysterious death of a teenage girl, and the strange events that follow. Probably the most convincing fake documentary I've seen, with really good performances from all involved. Sort of a cross between 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' and 'Paranormal Activity'. (Much better than PA). Please watch before the fucking Hollywood remake, which is coming in 2011. |

Oh, I have a copy of this. Gary Couzens lent it to me & I haven't watched it yet. It's a region 4 DVD isn't it? I'll have to get round to it this weekend. Mark S. |

My first post! I borrowed this from the video store (how odd the old name sticks when 100% of its stock is DVD) on DVD and really enjoyed it. Manages to slip in a couple of twists along the way, and the documentary approach really suits the material. As a side note, I lived in Ararat between 1981-1983, and the motel shown briefly in the movie (where the medium stayed) is the one my parents operated at the time and where we lived. Aah, nostalgia. |

Welcome, Robert! That's a nice little claim-to-horror-fame you've got there. I haven't seen this one (hadn't even heard of it, to be honest) but it sounds worth hunting down... |

Thanks Steve. Lake Mungo is a very good example of quiet horror - it rewards the careful viewer. I won't say it is perfect, but it is paced very well and the twists, when they came, do set you back on your heels. Ararat is a nice little country town (so little my teacher in Grade 6 was also the town mayor!) - it's in that section of Victoria that was the site for the gold boom in the mid 1800s, so some of the buildings from that era and a bit later are classic Victoria edifices. I was in late primary school at the time, and the town was quite Anglo, so I did cop a bit of stick for being of Italian descent. Judging by the exterior shot of the motel, nothing much has changed in almost 30 years! The section of building above the driveway entrance is part of the living quarters. To drag it back to horror, while we lived there, the local network screened the tv version of Salem's Lot - now that was terrifying! |

Hello there, Robert. Are there any ghost towns in Australia? |

Lincoln, I'm in Melbourne also - north western suburbs. Hubert - if by ghost towns do you mean abandoned towns, I would assume there are. I know of a couple of little hamlets in central Victoria where you wonder where the hell everyone is, but they just lack substantial populations, not inhabitants. Though there was one time we stopped for about 10 minutes during a long drive and we did not see one person moving around. I was laughing about it with my wife then got a bit spooked! Melbourne is reputed to have ghosts in a number of locales, the best known is Frederici (aka Fred Baker), who is said to haunt the Princess Theatre down the road from where I work. He died on stage in 1888 playing Faust and supposedly haunts the building to this day. |
