I suspect when we look back there were always indications that we'd like "horror". Anyone remember a hardback A4 sized book featuring a pale plump man wondering through a castle full of sinister and disturbing things? Best of all and one of the first inklings I'd be drawn to the dark was a series of books featuring a little boy who talked to a cat and featured lost people who lived behind a waterfall - but wanted to come back to this world for some reason. There was no blood or gore, it was simply unsettling. The author created a superb menaceing and unsettling atmosphere. Does anyone remember that series of books featuring the cat and the lost people? |

Me too. I love mysterious books like that. I have a memory of a book in which some kids have a weird adventure in a dreamlike place; all I remember are the feelings and the fact there was a 'touchstone' in it. It haunts my memories as much as any 'real' place. |

What was on the cover, Griff? Was it Lucy Boston? |

Can't remember but the colour illustrations inside can only be described as unsettling. Something wasn't quite right about the entire situation. The words eerie and unsettling were made for it. |

There was no overt horror just scenes of him separted from others in increasingly lonely locations. Often there would be people in the background but he was almost invisible to them. It gave me a feeling of growing dread as a kid when I read the books. |

Oh, I have a story like that, still in first draft. Had it lying round for ages. A bit 'interior'. I underestimate the use of props in stories, and plot mechanics. They can really move stuff along. |

Sounds interesting. What was 'inappropriate' about it, though? |

It was very subtle and disturbing. I still can't put my finger on what it was. |

Why was it 'inappropriate'? Not sure if it was or not, but it created a sense of growing melancholic atmosphere and dread in a clever and subtle way. It was also part of a series! |

It was a series of books that involved the boy and his "friend" the cat. |

It wasn't a book. It was the past you are trying to block because it drives you mad. I WAS that cat! |

You must have known that. You'll be telling me next that ERASERHEAD isn't all about the assassination of JFK. |
